🚢 Ready to take your marine science experience aboard a research vessel in the Pacific Ocean?

Ifremer is offering practical on-board training opportunities for two candidates from developing States through the ISA Contractors’ Training Programme.

Selected candidates will join one of two hydrographic survey planned for 2027 around Wallis and Futuna or French Polynesia. The cruises will involve Multibeam Echo Sounder survey as well as rock dredge, and the objective of the training is for the candidates to witness hydrographic surveys in the context of investigations for potential extension of the outer limit of the continental shelf as well as the associated geological interpretation of the data.

Applicants should have:

✅ A bachelor’s or master’s degree in hydrography, marine surveying, geophysics, geomatics or a related field;

âś… At least one year of relevant professional experience;

âś… Proficiency in English or French.

Ifremer will cover all costs related to the training. As a partner of the Women in Deep-Sea Research project, Ifremer has pledged to allocate 50 per cent of its training opportunities to qualified applicants.

At a side event on the margins of the Assembly meetings, the Seabed Authority invited Member States and stakeholders to celebrate four years of achievements under its Sustainable Seabed Knowledge Initiative (SSKI). The campaign has been made possible through the contributions of Member States, contractors, international organizations and universities serving as SSKI donors and partners.

Launched in 2022, SSKI is a global platform that advances research, capacity development and data-sharing tools for deep-sea biodiversity assessments.

In her opening remarks, Madam Secretary-General Leticia Carvalhorecalled that the Authority’s mandate includes the responsibility “to ensure the sustainable management of the ocean by safeguarding its ecosystems and enabling responsible human activities.” She added that “this requires robust scientific evidence to inform decision-making, as well as strong international cooperation, strategic partnerships and environmental stewardship.”

The International Seabed Authority is offering a consultancy opportunity for an experienced professional in marine geospatial analyses, ecological applications of Information Systems (GIS) and/or marine spatial planning.

Qualified candidates must have:

âś… At least five years of professional experience applying geospatial analyses to marine spatial planning;

âś… Proven ability to integrate, analyze, synthesize and visualize environmental and scientific data;

âś… The ability to translate complex information into clear written outputs for different stakeholders;

âś… Excellent command of spoken and written English;

✅ Familiarity with the ISA’s mandate under UNCLOS.

Working closely with the ISA Office of Stewardship, Environment and Resources, the consultant will provide scientific and technical expertise to support the development of Regional Environmental Management Plans (REMPs) and will provide technical support before, during and after REMP workshops.

📆 Mark your calendars: The Seabed Authority will host the 5th Annual Meeting of National Focal Points for Capacity Development on 27 August 2026.

The online meeting will bring together national representatives from across ISA Member States to review progress, identify capacity development needs and help shape future initiatives that promote the full and effective participation of developing States in activities in the Area.

The network brings together 111 focal points from 87 Member States, reflecting growing global engagement in capacity development and the implementation of the principle of the common heritage of humankind.

To celebrate International Youth Day, the International Seabed Authority (ISA) is pleased to announce Brazilian Marine Geologist, Malena Palmieri, as its newest SHE Champion.

In 2025, Ms. Palmieri was selected to participate in an at-sea training opportunity offered by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea (MOF-ROK) through the ISA Contractors’ Training Programme.

The 30-day expedition in the western Pacific Ocean focused on geological and environmental surveys. Drawing on her experience as a young woman working aboard a research vessel, Ms. Palmieri discusses in the video below the importance of the recently launched SHE Gender Compact.

The contribution of the International Seabed Authority’s African Academy for Deep Sea Diplomacy (ADSEA) to strengthening leadership in ocean governance across was the focus of a side event during the margins of the 31st Session of the ISA Assembly.

Delegates from ISA Member States and other stakeholders gathered on Wednesday, 29 July 2026, to hear from high-level representatives of the Government of Cameroon and participants in the ADSEA programme.

In her opening remarks, ISA Madam Secretary-General Leticia Carvalho reminded that “African States helped shape Part XI of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the 1994 Agreement”, adding that “That contribution must continue. African expertise needs to be present and heard as decisions concerning the Area are taken. ADSEA helps meet this need.”

ADSEA forms part of the ISA’s broader commitment to capacity development as a strategic investment, aligning with the ISA Capacity Development Strategy, and has the government of the Republic of and the International Relations Institute of Cameroon (IRIC), as official hosting partners.

New Internship opportunity available under the International Seabed Authority Contractors´ Training Programme!

Ifremer is offering one (1) internship in Environmental Studies for candidates from developing States.

During the two-month internship (scheduled for the second half of 2027), the selected candidate will receive training in:

➡️ Meiofauna taxonomy;

➡️ Binocular imaging;

➡️ High-resolution digital imaging and acquisition techniques; and

➡️ Artificial intelligence applications.

The intern will also contribute to the development of innovative tools to enhance taxonomic knowledge and support marine biodiversity research.

If you hold a degree in and are enrolled in a master's programme in , preferably in marine biology, biodiversity and ecology, or molecular biosciences, this opportunity is for you!
