Question - Do you always need an Italian language certificate to apply for Italian citizenship by residence?
Answer - not necessarily!
A common misconception surrounding Italian citizenship applications is that every applicant must submit an Italian language certificate at B1 level.
In reality, Italian law provides for several exceptions.
Applicants 𝐦𝐚𝐲 be exempt from this requirement if they:
✅ hold an EU long-term residence permit issued under Italian immigration law;
✅ have signed the Italian Integration Agreement (Accordo di Integrazione);
✅ suffer from serious conditions affecting their ability to learn a language, provided that these circumstances are properly documented by a public healthcare institution;
✅ possess certain Italian educational qualifications which can be used to demonstrate the required language proficiency without obtaining the B1 certificate.
