There’s an important legal principle you should know — Quantum Meruit. ⚖️

In simple words: you may be entitled to reasonable compensation for the benefit you provided.

Under Section 70 of the Indian Contract Act, 1872, where a person lawfully does something for another, does not intend to do it gratuitously, and the other person enjoys the benefit, the law may require compensation.

Can a decision be made against you without giving you a fair chance to explain? ⚖️

The answer lies in one of the core principles of Natural Justice — Audi Alteram Partem, meaning “hear the other side.”

Before an adverse decision is taken in proceedings affecting your rights, fairness generally requires that you get a meaningful opportunity to:

✅ Know the allegations against you
✅ Receive relevant notice and material
✅ Present your explanation and evidence
✅ Respond to the material relied upon against you
✅ Receive a fair and reasoned decision

In Arjun Dass v. State of Andhra Pradesh & Ors., 2026 INSC 592, the Supreme Court reiterated that an opportunity of hearing must be real, not merely symbolic, and that relevant material relied upon against an affected person should be furnished to enable an effective defence.

Justice is not just about the final decisionIt is also about a fair process before that decision. ⚖
