The Bar Council of India (BCI) has issued a circular reaffirming that advocates must maintain professional ethics while using social media. The circular makes it clear that advocates cannot advertise or solicit clients directly or indirectly through digital platforms. Any form of self-promotion, paid endorsements, misleading legal advice, sensational content, or false claims is prohibited.
Advocates must also protect client confidentiality and avoid sharing information that could affect pending proceedings or the administration of justice.
At the same time, the BCI permits advocates to share legal knowledge and educational content, provided it is accurate, dignified, and not promotional.
The circular also cautions advocates to verify AI-generated legal content before publishing it. State Bar Councils have been directed to monitor compliance, and any violation of these ethical standards may attract disciplinary action.
