For some women uncovering the veil ('purdah' or 'ghunghat') in Indian villages (whether you're Hindu or Muslim) is liberation from traditions of subjugation and oppressive patriarchal structures that dictate women to conform. The veil is cultural, not religious.
This movement is led by a Hindu woman, Manju Yadav who has discarded the veil in her village and is supported by women and men alike.

A little excerpt from our Concept Note:
"ACT believes in respecting the agency of the client and how she wants to respond to a situation. It is up to the woman to realise if she wants to take the matter to the police, pursue the legal route or simply find the strength to walk out of an abusive relationship...What is unique about ACT is the special attention given to and separate programme developed for Intimate Partner Violence. Most organisations in India focus solely on domestic violence when it comes to abusive and violent relationships. The Protection of Women Against Domestic Violence Act, 2005 covers only married women and women who are in a relationship in the “nature of marriage”. The Act then leaves out of its scope a large section of women who are in intimate relationships even though they are unmarried or not living in a domestic space with their partners. Our main target group under this programme are women between the ages of 18-30, mainly in University."

At ACT, we maintain 100% confidentiality of our client's identity, issues and correspondence. It is only with consent and most times on their insistence that we share these incredibly brave struggles of women going through intimate partner violence & domestic violence. What amazes and makes us strive on is the sheer strength our women clients show even when in a disadvantaged situation - so let's TALK about Domestic Violence. There is no shame in having undergone violence - the shame should be relegated to the abuser. Let's not stay silent anymore! Intervene for a loved one or anyone, or reclaim control of your own life. Our first workshop in the Intimate Partner Violence series!

What is unique about our organisation? Not only do we address domestic violence (in marriages and live-in relationships) but also abuse and violence in relationships between young and unmarried couples, who do not fall under the Domestic Violence Act.

We are delighted to work with St. Stephen's College for sustained and meaningful dialogue!

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high
Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
By narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way
Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit
Where the mind is led forward by thee
Into ever-widening thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake
(Rabindranath Tagore, 1910)

Happy 69th Independence Day, India. Let us strive to be truly free.

"I want to give women strength, to get ahead in life. You have the right to move on and move ahead fearlessly. And if you think there aren't people to support you, you'll find that to be untrue. We are with you. But most importantly, you have to make that decision to speak up against violence and injustice for yourself.

I want to give courage and all my support to women and girls like me, who have undergone domestic violence and those that are still living in such violence. You are not alone."

- Shabana is fighting her cases in court with the help of ACT and SEWA, and she's working with the two organisations on a new project to raise awareness about domestic violence and dowry in Delhi's communities.

The latest report on domestic violence presented by Maneka Gandhi, minister of women and child development, in the parliament says “The number of cases registered under Domestic Violence Act, 2005 has gone down over the past three years.”

“As per the provisional data of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) which is available up to 2014, the number of such cases registered was 531 in 2014, 4204 in 2013 and 16,351 in 2012,” the report said.

The figure suggests that case of domestic violence have drastically taken a downward spiral.

But the reality is opposite to what the figure claims. In fact, the limited data available indicate domestic violence might be soaring.

What looks like an impressive 74% decline in domestic violence over a year, from 2012 to 2011 is actually misleading. 17 of 34 states and union territories have simply not released data to the NCRB. Among them were many large states including Maharashtra, Gujarat and Bihar.

And the states that released data, showed a remarkable surge in no. of cases, former Andhra Pradesh accounted for the highest number of cases registered under the Domestic Violence Act: 3,758 in 2013, a 75% increase from 2012 (2,150 cases).
