To get DGS approval for an LSA (Life Saving Appliance) service station, the process begins with submitting an application to the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS). The service station must be a registered entity and comply with IMO and SOLAS guidelines for safety equipment servicing. Next, the station must establish a proper Quality Management System and appoint a certified “competent person” responsible for servicing activities. After that, inspection and verification are carried out by the Mercantile Marine Department (MMD). Once approved, the station receives certification valid for 5 years with periodic intermediate verification. Finally, only DGS-approved stations are allowed to service inflatable LSAs for Indian and foreign ships in Indian waters, ensuring strict compliance with maritime safety standards.

To comply with the latest DG Shipping swimming pool rules for maritime training institutes, first ensure your institute has an on-campus swimming pool meeting the mandatory dimensions of at least 50 ft length, 30 ft width, and depth ranging from 3 ft to 12 ft; next, install a 2-meter-high jumping platform to meet Personal Survival Techniques (PST) training standards; after that, maintain strict hygiene and safety protocols including 24/7 CCTV surveillance, proper filtration systems, and water quality levels (chlorine 1.0–3.0 ppm and pH around 7.2–7.8) with regular testing; then ensure that any external or off-campus training facility is within 80 km and properly disclosed to candidates if beyond 10 km; finally, complete compliance before the enforcement deadlines, as non-compliant institutes risk withdrawal of course approvals and suspension of training programs by DG Shipping.

15/03/2026

A chartering license for foreign-flagged vessels in India is a regulatory approval issued by the Directorate General of Shipping that allows foreign ships to operate in Indian waters for specific commercial activities. The license is governed mainly under Sections 406 and 407 of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958, which regulate the chartering of foreign vessels by Indian companies or foreign entities involved in coastal trade. The licensing system ensures that maritime operations comply with safety, security, and trade regulations while protecting opportunities for Indian-flag ships. Companies applying for this license must submit documents such as vessel registry certificates, charter party agreements, statutory safety certificates, and crew compliance records. The application process is now largely digital through the eSamudra portal, enabling businesses to apply, track approvals, and maintain compliance with India’s maritime regulations efficiently.

The approval of a Life Saving Appliance (LSA) service station by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) is essential for companies that inspect, repair, and maintain maritime safety equipment such as life rafts, rescue boats, and other inflatable life-saving appliances. These service stations must comply with international maritime standards like International Maritime Organization (IMO) guidelines and the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) regulations. To obtain approval, the service station must be a registered company, maintain a quality management system, employ trained and competent personnel, and receive authorization from equipment manufacturers. The approval certificate issued by DGS is typically valid for five years, with intermediate verification conducted by the Mercantile Marine Department to ensure compliance with safety and technical standards.

26/02/2026

An RPSL (Recruitment and Placement Service Licence) issued by the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) in India can be cancelled for serious non-compliance with regulatory norms designed to protect seafarers and maintain industry standards. Common reasons include engaging in unauthorized recruitment of seafarers, failing to submit mandated Articles of Agreement (AoAs) on time, submitting forged or false documentation such as CDCs or certificates, failing to respond to official notices or show-cause letters from DG Shipping, involvement in cases of seafarer abandonment, wage denial, or mistreatment, and repeated breaches of key international conventions like the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), 2006 or the STCW Convention. When such violations are identified, DG Shipping can suspend the licence, issue a show-cause notice, and ultimately proceed with cancellation and possible blacklisting of the agency and its directors if corrective actions are not satisfactorily taken.
