Arrest. Detention. Protest. Dissent. We often know these words by their legal definitions. Perhaps we should also remember them by their place in our history.
Imagine removing every protest, every arrest, every act of civil disobedience from the story of India's independence. The story would perhaps look very different. And yet, decades later, we sometimes treat protest as though it is inherently disruptive to the idea of a nation.
Recent events have brought that contradiction into focus again.
Student protests this summer led to mass detentions and a police crackdown, followed by Supreme Court directions protecting protesters without criminal antecedents from coercive action.
This is not about saying every protest is right, or every protester is right. It is about remembering something more fundamental:
A democracy does not promise that everyone will agree. It promises that disagreement has a place.
Our freedom fighters did not simply inherit a free India. They challenged the India that existed before it.
This Independence Day, perhaps that is the legacy worth remembering. Happy Independence Day.
