On 17 February 2026, the Legal Services Clinic of Dr Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow, visited the Lucknow District Jail, as part of our ongoing commitment to understanding the realities faced by undertrial prisoners and strengthening access to free legal aid.

In preparation for the visit, the team undertook a detailed review of relevant legal provisions to ensure that they were equipped to provide informed and responsible assistance. They interacted with 40 undertrial inmates, listened carefully to their individual concerns, and gained valuable insight into the legal and personal challenges they face within the justice system.

A guided tour of the facility further enabled the team to observe systemic gaps and recognise the crucial role of timely legal intervention in safeguarding the rights and dignity of individuals. The tour also busted many myths about the state of prisons in India. The volunteers also interacted with the Jailers, who provided them with insight into not just the District Jail but also the neighbouring Model Jail in Lucknow.

The Legal Services Clinic expresses its sincere gratitude to its mentors, ProfPrem Kumar Gautam Sir and Vikas Bhati Sir, along with the District Legal Services Authority, for their guidance and continued support. The visit reaffirms their dedication to promoting fairness, dignity and equal access to justice for all.

On 18 November 2025, three teams from the Juvenile Assistance Justice Team of the Legal Services Clinic, Dr Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow, conducted field visits to five Child Care Institutions housing over 380 children. The teams examined living conditions, hygiene, infrastructure, educational access, documentation processes, counselling and medical support, staff preparedness, and compliance with Child Welfare Committee standards.

The visits revealed significant disparities across institutions: while some maintained organised routines, child-friendly spaces, computer and hobby classes, music and dance activities, and well-trained staff, others struggled with poor sanitation, restrictive environments, outdated or missing identity documents, limited counselling support, lack of facilities for specially-abled children, inadequate vocational training, and minimal planning for children approaching eighteen. Recurring issues included Aadhaar update difficulties, reluctance in admitting CWC-referred cases, low staff training, absence of legal assistance mechanisms, and documentation gaps such as missing birth certificates.

The teams interacted individually with children, identified cases requiring educational and legal follow-up, and documented concerns requiring institutional strengthening. The visits provided a consolidated understanding of the on-ground realities within Child Care Institutions and reinforced the Legal Services Clinic’s commitment to ensuring safer, supportive, and rights-oriented environments for every child in institutional care.
