Mauritius Student Visa Process (Short Overview)

According to the Guidelines for Application and Issuance of Entry/Residence Permit to Study in Mauritius

Before Coming to Mauritius
Student gets admission in an HEC/MQA-approved institution.
College enrolls the student on NELS and generates an Enrolment Key.
Student submits the visa application online through NELS using the enrolment key.
Documents Required
Passport bio pages
Passport-size photo
Offer Letter
Acceptance Letter
Bank statement showing at least MUR 150,000
Sponsorship letter (if applicable)
Accommodation proof
Medical reports (Fitness Certificate, Blood Tests, Chest X-ray, etc.)
Visa Decision
Passport & Immigration Office (PIO) normally processes complete applications within 2 weeks.
If approved, an Entry Permit is issued.
After Arrival in Mauritius

Within 14 days of arrival, the student must:

Medical Requirements in Mauritius
Chest X-ray
Full Blood Count (FBC)
Hepatitis B
Hepatitis C
VDRL/TPHA
HIV Test
Filariasis Test (for students from India and other listed countries)
Leprosy Certificate (required for students from India and certain countries)
Original Document Verification

Student receives an appointment from PIO and must present:

Original Passport
Police Clearance Certificate (PCC)
Bank Statements
Sponsorship Letter (if applicable)
Accommodation Proof
Offer Letter
Any other document requested by PIO.
Final Outcome

After verification, PIO will:

Grant the Residence Permit, or
Refuse the application.
Important Points
Students can work up to 20 hours per week while studying.
Tourist/Visitor visas cannot be converted into a student permit.
Overstaying is a serious offence.

Simple Flow:
Admission → Enrolment Key → NELS Application → Entry Permit Approval → Travel to Mauritius → Local Medical Tests → PIO Document Verification → Residence Permit Issued.

2. Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS)
3. Blood Urea
4. Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg)
5. Hepatitis C Antibody (Anti-HCV)
6. HIV Test (Method Used Must Be Specified)
7. VDRL Test
8. TPHA Test
9. Filariasis Test (for students from applicable countries, including India)
10. Leprosy Examination / Clinical Screening (Doctor’s confirmation required for applicable countries, including India)
11. Full Medical Examination / Fitness Certificate

More than 400 foreign nationals have been arrested for living illegally in Mauritius during a major five-and-a-half-month police crackdown, authorities have revealed.

A total of 428 non-citizens were detained between 1 January and 15 June 2026.

Police headquarters at the Central Barracks confirmed the arrests were the result of regular checks and targeted operations conducted across the island.

Under the Non-Citizens (Employment Restriction) Act, employing a foreign worker without a valid work permit is a criminal offence.

Employers found breaching the law face severe penalties, including fines ranging from Rs 100,000 to Rs 500,000, and prison sentences of up to five years.

Furthermore, the courts can order non-compliant employers to cover all maintenance and repatriation costs for the individuals involved.

Members of the public are being urged to report suspected cases of illegal residency or irregular employment by contacting the police hotlines on 148 or 999.
