If your idea of hospitality is mainly luxury hotels, travel and guest-facing roles, look deeper.

Hospitality management is a demanding operating environment where service quality, people management and commercial decisions often happen at the same time.

Before choosing a programme in this field, ask yourself:

• Do I enjoy working with people even when situations are difficult or unpredictable?
• Am I comfortable taking responsibility for service problems, not just delivering good experiences?
• Do I want to understand how staffing, cost control, guest experience and daily operations connect?
• Can I see myself leading teams in a fast-moving service environment?
• Am I interested in the business behind hospitality, not only the customer-facing side?
• Does the type of work I want actually require hospitality-specific training, or would a broader business pathway fit better?

That is the conversation to have before evaluating a programme such as the Bachelor of Applied Hotel Management at PIHMS.

A course can teach you the field.

But first, you need to know whether the field fits you.

The same course can be a smart choice for one student — and the wrong choice for another.

Your friend may have a different academic background, work experience, career goal, skill gap or professional requirement.

So before choosing a programme in New Zealand, ask:

• What career direction am I actually trying to move towards?
• What do I already know, and what capability do I still need to build?
• Does this programme fit my previous study and experience?
• What will I actually study — not just what is written in the course title?
• Which roles is the curriculum designed to prepare students for?
• Does the career require separate recognition, registration or licensing?
• Are the entry requirements, campus and intake suitable for my profile?
• How does this programme fit into my wider New Zealand study and career plan?

A course should not be chosen because someone you know chose it.

It should have a clear reason for you.

Kuljinder Singh did not follow the conventional Class 12-to-bachelor’s academic pathway.

Instead, his academic background included:

• Diploma of Business
• Advanced Diploma of Business
• Diploma of Accounting

He had also spent around 8–9 years in Australia, but had not achieved the long-term migration outcome he was looking for.

Kuljinder later approached SEKHRIS for immigration advice and guidance on his next step.

His case required more than simply looking for a programme.

We assessed his academic qualifications, professional experience and future goals together before considering an appropriate New Zealand study pathway.

The outcome:

🎓 Master of Applied Management
🏫 Otago Polytechnic
📍 Auckland
🇳🇿 New Zealand Student Visa Approved

Kuljinder shared that Munish Sekhri Sir, Geetika Ma’am, Harpreet Ma’am and the SEKHRIS team supported him throughout the process with professionalism, clarity and consistent guidance.

His case is a useful reminder that a non-traditional academic profile should not be assessed only against the conventional academic route.

For this programme, entry may also be considered on the basis of a combination of academic qualifications and relevant skills and knowledge gained through work or professional experience, subject to the institution’s assessment.

Every applicant is different, and admission and visa decisions remain subject to the relevant institution and immigration requirements.

Going to a New Zealand education fair? 🇳🇿

Don’t use the conversation only to ask “Am I eligible?”

Eligibility tells you whether you may be able to enter a programme. It does not tell you whether that programme is the right decision for your background, career direction or future plans.

Use the fair to ask better questions:

• What academic background does this programme really assume?
• If my previous qualification is in another field, what makes my profile suitable?
• Which majors, specialisations and subjects are actually available at my intended campus and intake?
• What practical capability will I build beyond academic theory?
• What should I realistically be able to do after completing the programme that I cannot do today?
• Which career directions does the curriculum support, and what does the qualification itself not qualify me to do?
• If internships, placements or projects are mentioned, are they guaranteed, competitive, optional or student-sourced?
• What is the real programme cost, including tuition, compulsory fees, materials and programme-specific expenses?
• If a scholarship is available, is it automatic or competitive, and what conditions apply?

Then verify before you commit.

Programme, entry, fees, intake, campus and delivery → the institution’s current official information

Professional recognition, registration or licensing → the relevant professional authority

Immigration conditions → Immigration New Zealand

An education fair can give you options.

Your final decision should have reasons.

Can every international student in New Zealand work 25 hours a week? 🇳🇿

Not necessarily.

Depending on what you are studying and the conditions on your student visa, you may be allowed to work up to 25 hours a week.

A few important things to know:

• Eligible tertiary students may have work rights of up to 25 hours a week
• Some students have different work conditions depending on their programme and visa
• PhD and Research Master’s students can have different work rights
• If your visa was granted with a 20-hour condition, it does not automatically change to 25 hours

The safest approach is simple: check the work conditions stated on your own eVisa or visa letter before making plans around part-time work.

Don’t assume “25 hours” applies to every student.

Considering a different field for postgraduate study in New Zealand? 🇳🇿

Changing fields can make sense — but eligibility shouldn’t be the only question you ask.

Before choosing a new postgraduate programme, first understand the career logic behind the change.

Ask:

• What have you already studied?
• What experience and transferable skills do you bring?
• Are you moving towards a different role, industry or skill gap?
• What career problem is the new field meant to solve?
• Does the programme actually build the knowledge and capability you need?
• Do you meet its exact entry requirements and prerequisites?
• Are there any professional or registration requirements connected with that career?

Some postgraduate programmes may accept applicants from different academic backgrounds, while others require prior study in a relevant field. The exact requirements depend on the specific programme and institution.

The goal is not simply to find a course that accepts your profile.

It is to choose a programme that makes sense for your background, your career direction and your wider New Zealand study plan.

New Zealand’s Post-Study Work Visa eligibility is changing from 16 November 2026.

Under the new rules, eligibility is being extended to graduates who complete an NZQCF Level 7 Graduate Diploma in New Zealand and also hold a bachelor’s degree completed in New Zealand or overseas — provided the applicable requirements are met. [Immigration New Zealand](https://www.immigration.govt.nz/about-us/news-centre/post-study-work-visa-eligibility-extended-from-16-november-2026/?utm_source=chatgpt.com)

But the qualification level alone does not tell the whole story.

Your study history, previous qualification and the specific eligibility requirements all need to be considered before assuming you qualify for a Post-Study Work Visa.

Planning your study pathway in New Zealand? Understand the immigration dependencies before making the decision.

Parents: before you fund a New Zealand course, ask one important question — why this one? 🇳🇿

“This is a good course” is not enough.

A course recommendation should make sense for your child’s:

• Education and academic background
• Strengths and interests
• Experience and existing skills
• Career direction
• Programme content and practical learning
• Professional requirements, where relevant
• Wider New Zealand study and career plan

The student should come before the course.

Before committing time and money, understand what your child will learn, what capabilities they will build, and where that qualification is intended to take them.

Don’t just fund the course. Understand the plan.
