ADVOCATE’S DRESS CODE — WHAT DOES IT REPRESENT?
A lawyer’s dress is not merely a uniform.
It represents something much bigger:
Dignity. Discipline. Neutrality. Responsibility.
The black coat has historically become associated with seriousness and professional authority.
The white shirt and bands reinforce simplicity, formality and uniformity before the Court.
And perhaps the most important idea behind a prescribed dress code is this:
When an advocate enters Court, personal style takes a back seat to the institution of justice.
Everyone appearing at the Bar may come from a different background, chamber, city or social position.
But before the Court, the uniform creates a common professional identity.
⚖️ Black coat — dignity and solemnity
⚖️ White attire — simplicity and neutrality
⚖️ Bands — professional identity of the Bar
⚖️ Formal appearance — respect for courtroom decorum
Of course, the true dignity of an advocate does not come from clothing alone.
It comes from:
Preparation. Integrity. Courtesy. Courage. Professional conduct.
The gown may identify the lawyer.
Conduct defines the advocate.
