Dr. Y.B. Satyanarayana has passed away.

Dr. Y.B. Satyanarayana was a chemist, long-serving college principal in Hyderabad, Dalit activist, and co-founder of the Centre for Dalit Studies. His 2011 memoir My Father Baliah (HarperCollins) remains one of the most precise and moving records of Madiga life in Telangana.

It chronicles three generations: the loss of land granted by the Nizam to his great-grandfather Narsiah, the subsequent migration, and the quiet, determined struggle of his father Baliah a semi-literate railway worker to educate his children against the full weight of untouchability.

Written with restraint and clarity, the book documents both the daily humiliations of caste and the slow, hard-won emergence of dignity through education and railway employment.

The meticulously recorded history of Telangana’s untouchable life that Satyanarayana left behind continues to stand as his lasting contribution.
