"He's my friend. I'm only helping him get the loan."

That is how many people become guarantors.

The borrower receives the money. The guarantor often receives nothing except a signature opportunity. Years later, the borrower stops paying and suddenly the bank starts looking at the guarantor.

A guarantee is not merely a formality. Depending on the terms of the guarantee and the applicable law, a guarantor can face serious financial consequences when the borrower defaults. Before signing, understand exactly what you are undertaking, what the guarantee covers and what liabilities may arise.

Never sign a financial document merely because someone says, "It's just a formality."

A uniform can command attention. But every exercise of police power must still have a legal basis.

People often comply immediately when someone says, "Come with us," "Give us your phone," "Sign this," or "Don't ask questions." But the existence of police authority does not mean every demand automatically becomes lawful. Search, seizure, questioning, arrest and taking possession of digital devices are governed by law and procedure.

Knowing your rights does not mean obstructing the police. It means understanding the difference between lawful authority and mere pressure. Cooperate with a lawful process. But you are also entitled to ask: "Under what authority?"

THE MONEY JUST APPEARED IN YOUR ACCOUNT.

Then a stranger calls.

"I sent it by mistake. Please return it immediately."

Before you do anything, stop. Do not rely on an SMS, screenshot, email, payment notification or WhatsApp message claiming that money has been credited. Open your bank's trusted channel and verify whether the money actually reached your account. If it did, contact your bank and ask for the proper process to deal with the mistaken credit. Do not treat unexpected money as free money and do not rush simply because the sender is creating pressure. If someone becomes aggressive or insists that you send it to a different account, that is even more reason to stop.

Do not become the middleman in someone else's transaction. Never forward or return money to a different account merely because someone tells you to. Let the bank verify the transaction and guide the reversal through the proper channel. And remember: receiving money through UPI does not require you to enter your UPI PIN.

A law student raises a voice against the proposed participation of the Chief Justice of India at a university convocation. The response? An order directing State Bar Councils not to enrol the entire 2026 graduating batch of NALSAR as advocates and seeking information about those who organised or mobilised the campaign. The order was withdrawn within hours.

That raises a much bigger question than this particular controversy: before issuing an order that can affect someone's career, was the legal power to issue it properly examined? The Supreme Court has now questioned the BCI's intervention and observed that students have a right to protest.

A regulator of the legal profession should understand better than most that power must come from law. If an order is issued first and withdrawn only after public and judicial scrutiny, perhaps the first question should have been asked before the order was issued: "Do we actually have the legal authority to do this?"

When someone goes missing, every hour matters. Yet families have often faced delays, being told to wait, search on their own or come back later before the police formally register a case.

The Supreme Court has now made the position clear: a missing-person complaint cannot simply be brushed aside because the person is an adult or because the police assume that the person may have left voluntarily. The Court has directed immediate registration of FIRs for missing persons irrespective of age or gender and has warned States that non-compliance may invite contempt proceedings.

A missing person is not merely a "missing entry" on a police record. Behind every such complaint is a family waiting for someone to come home. The first response must be immediate, serious and lawful.

A statement does not become defamatory merely because it makes someone uncomfortable. At the same time, not every claim labelled as "truth" is legally protected.

The Constitution guarantees freedom of speech and expression, but that freedom is subject to reasonable restrictions, including defamation. Whether a publication is protected depends on factors such as the truthfulness of the statement, the available evidence, the context in which it was made and whether recognised legal defences apply. Even where a person believes they are speaking the truth, legal proceedings may still be initiated and a court ultimately decides whether the speech is protected or amounts to defamation. The law seeks to balance two important values: the public's right to know and an individual's right to reputation.

A relationship may end with a goodbye. But in the digital age, betrayal often begins after the breakup. A private photo, a personal video or even an intimate chat shared in confidence can be forwarded in seconds and reach hundreds of people before the victim even knows.

Trust is personal. Sharing someone else's private content without consent can have serious legal consequences depending on the facts and circumstances of each case. The internet never forgets, and a single tap can change someone's life forever. Sometimes, the greatest damage isn't caused by the breakup, it is caused by what someone chooses to do after it.

A person may be criticised. Their conduct may offend public opinion. Others may strongly disagree with what they have done. But none of these, by themselves, automatically make an act a criminal offence.

The rule of law requires that criminal liability must be founded on law, not on public outrage alone. Recently, while referring to arrests over the consumption of chicken on the Ganga, a Supreme Court judge observed that there is no law prohibiting such consumption over the river and questioned the arrests made in that context. The observation serves as a reminder that the power to arrest must always operate within the boundaries of law.

The investment platform showed steady profits. Every day the numbers went up. Encouraged by the returns, more money was invested. Then came the day the investor tried to withdraw the funds. The account stopped responding. Customer support disappeared. The profits that looked so convincing existed only on a screen.

Online investment frauds often begin with trust built through social media, messaging apps or seemingly professional websites. What appears to be a profitable investment can quickly become a dispute involving deception, digital evidence, financial transactions and criminal investigation. Sometimes, the biggest loss is not caused by the market, it is caused by believing the wrong promise.

An ancestral property dispute does not always end because one generation chooses to remain silent. Sometimes the next generation begins asking questions that were never asked before. Can a grandchild assert a claim even if his or her parents never pursued one? The answer is rarely as simple as a "yes" or "no."

Rights in ancestral or family property depend on several factors, including the nature of the property, the family history, previous partitions or settlements, succession and the applicable law. Every family has a different story, and those facts often determine whether a legal claim can still be maintained. Sometimes, the most important question is not who stayed silent but whose rights the law continues to recognize.
