THE ASSAM PROHIBITION OF POLYGAMY BILL, 2025:
Assam has officially rewritten a crucial chapter in its legal framework. The State Assembly has passed a bold new bill that introduces some of the strictest punishments in India for bigamy, setting a national precedent that is already sparking intense debate.
Under this new law, any person who marries again without legally dissolving their first marriage can face up to 10 years of imprisonment. This isn’t just a procedural update — it is a strong statement about marital accountability and the protection of vulnerable partners.
For years, countless women in Assam and across India have suffered due to secret second marriages, abandonment, and the misuse of personal laws. Many battles were fought in silence. Many lives were upended without justice.
This bill aims to change that.
Supporters say it will:
✔️ Protect women from deceit and exploitation
✔️ Strengthen legal accountability in marriages
✔️ Reinforce the seriousness of marital commitments
✔️ Deter those who misuse marriage for manipulation
Critics argue that the law must be implemented sensitively to avoid wrongful accusations. They emphasize that justice must remain balanced and fair.
But one thing is undeniable:
Assam has taken one of the strongest steps yet to ensure that marriage cannot be misused, twisted, or treated casually.
The message is clear and uncompromising:
👉 Marriage is a legal and emotional responsibility — not a loophole to exploit.
A decisive move.
A conversation starter.
And perhaps the beginning of more reforms across the nation. 🇮🇳✨

The Karnataka Legislative Assembly successfully approved the Karnataka Prohibition of Violence Against Advocates Bill, 2023. Karnataka's Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, HK Patil, introduced the bill on December 11, 2023.

The statement of object and reasons for the bill underscore the vulnerability of advocates to malicious and baseless prosecution by opposing parties while fulfilling their responsibilities. Such interference obstructs their duties and undermines the administration of justice itself.

Further, the statement emphasizes that during the Eighth United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders in Havana, Cuba, India, as a participant, endorsed the "Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers.
