Origin Story of Starbucks…
[starbucks origin story, history of starbucks, how starbucks started, business success story]
Starbucks Didn’t Always Sell Coffee.
What if I told you that the world’s most recognisable coffee brand spent its first ten years selling nothing but bags of beans?
The original Starbucks, opened in Seattle in 1971, had no lattes, no frappuccinos, and no cups with your name on them. It was a specialty retailer — just high-quality roasted beans for people to brew at home. For a decade, that was the entire business.
The story changed in 1983 when a 29-year-old Starbucks employee named Howard Schultz walked into an espresso bar in Milan on his way to a trade show. He saw something that stopped him cold — people coming back three times a day, not for the caffeine, but for the feeling. He came home and pitched the idea to the founders. They said no.
So Schultz quit, knocked on 242 doors to raise money, absorbed 217 rejections, built his own competing coffee bar chain from scratch, proved it worked, and then came back and bought the company that had rejected him — for $3.8 million. That company is worth over $100 billion today.
This video unpacks one of the most underrated origin stories in business history. It is not just about coffee. It is about what happens when you trust your instincts more than the room you are standing in.
