Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiary, DePuy Orthopedics, have been ordered to pay more than $1 billion in damages to six plaintiffs in Dallas, the USA who were found to have been injured by one of the company's all-metal hip implants.

ASR XL Acetabular Hip System and ASR Hip resurfacing system is a hip implant system by Johnson and Johnson sold in India through its subsidiary DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc.in India after obtaining a license in 2006. The license was renewed by the regulator in 2010 even after the product was red flagged in Australia in 2009. What is the compensation package provided to the victims? The expert level committee constituted by the Union Health Ministry has constituted a package for the victims of the faulty metal hip implants of Johnson and Johnson in India. These implants had been done for over 4700 patients. Under this compensation package, victims will draw a monthly interest compensation of merely ₹13,350 if the affected patient with permanent disability invests a base amount of ₹20 lakh in a fixed deposit, which accrues 7 percent interest annually. In a recent finding, an Expert Committee set up by the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has made Johnson & Johnson liable to pay over 20 lakh rupees to each of its customers, on the account of increasing reports, from doctors and patients, over the failure of the hip replacement systems distributed in India.
