Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Monday strongly rebuked Advocate Mathews Nedumpara for making what the Court termed as reckless and improper submissions during the mentioning round. The CJI warned that strict action would follow if such conduct continued, stating that courtroom decorum and responsibility in submissions cannot be compromised.
The sharp exchange followed Nedumpara’s attempt to mention a petition challenging the collegium system and seeking restoration of the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC). When informed by the CJI that no such petition was reflected in the Registry, Nedumpara remarked that while Constitution Benches were being constituted for “Adani and Ambani”, matters affecting the common man were not being heard—comments that visibly displeased the Bench.
Responding sternly, CJI Surya Kant cautioned Nedumpara against misbehaviour in court, reminding him of past interactions and warning that such conduct would not be tolerated. The incident echoes previous reprimands, including in 2024 when the Supreme Court Registry declined to register a similar NJAC plea as non-maintainable, and last year when then CJI Sanjiv Khanna had pulled up Nedumpara for making political statements in court.
