Consumer Education and Research Society most active consumer organization in Power Sector of Gujarat in particular and India in general have filed a petition against Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission for functioning as a commercial entity. The Regulatory Commission is an independent and Quasi-judicial body constituted under Electricity Act to protect the interest of consumers and Electricity Companies. CERS alleges that GERC has deposited Rs.69.5 Crores in Banks collected from electricity consumers of Gujarat.

Consumer Education & Research Society's (CERS) endeavor to prevent insurance companies from adopting unfair practices to cheat consumers has helped a resident of a small village in Gandhinagar district in getting his valid insurance claim settled. The claim was made for reimbursement of medical treatment of his son under a health insurance policy cover of New India Assurance. The claim had initially been rejected by the public sector insurer under the pretext of the diseases being hereditary. CERS took up the matter in the Consumer Forum and a ruling was passed in favor of the complainant wherein the Forum directed the insurance company to settle the claim for full amount along with interest. The Consumer Forum also asked New India Assurance to pay Natvarbhai Rs. 4,000 as compensation for the mental agony caused and Rs. 3,000 towards the litigation cost involved.

Ahmedabad headquartered national consumer rights organization, Consumer Education Research Centre (CERC) organized a workshop on ‘Stock Market Investing- Products, Process and Problem Resolution’ in collaboration with Indian Institute of Financial Services (IIFS) and Bombay Stock Exchange at the premises of CERC. The aim of the workshop was to impart to investors knowledge of the correct process of the investing, to protect the investors from stock market scams and complaints. Experts from Bombay Stock Exchange, SEBI, HDFC Securities and Indian Institute of Financial Services shared their views on the risks associated with the investment process and investors rights to get their complaints resolved. The core issue discussed in the workshop was not about where to invest but on how to invest and with thorough knowledge.

K.K.Bajaj of Consumer Education & Research Society , a pioneer recognized for taking initiatives to protect consumers interest in power sector of India and V.J. Vachharajani of Vadodara had filed petition in 2007 before Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission for not providing earth terminal to Gujarat consumers as per the Rule 33 of Indian Electricity Rules. This Rule clearly states that DISCOMs have to provide Earth Terminal at premises of consumers as it ensures the safety of consumers and also protect electrical gadgets of consumers against unexpected mishaps.

The evasive practice adopted by general insurance companies to minimize the payment of claim was once again exposed by Consumer Education & Research Society (CERS), an NGO recognized for pioneering initiatives in consumer welfare, which has helped an elderly couple of Ahmedabad to get their claim submitted for a knee replacement surgery fully settled. CERC invites all the consumers to participate in this event and visit CERC to know their rights and responsibilities.The issues to be addressed during the course of the event include defective products, complaints related to utility service providers, and services provided by banks and insurance companies etc. An informed consumer and a better consumer protection would surely yield positive results

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Consumer Education & Research Society (CERS) has been admitted by Gujarat High Court, raising the issue of plastic carry bags being charged by commercial establishments of Ahmedabad in a blatant breach of the directives issued by Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF), Govt. of India and Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).
