We are glad to share that Kav LaOved has joined the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI), a global alliance of trade unions, civil society organizations, and companies working to advance workers’ rights and responsible business practices. Joining ETI reflects growing recognition of the relevance and credibility of our work promoting labour rights and dignity for all workers. This partnership will strengthen our ability to contribute field-based expertise from Israel and the OPT to international discussions on ethical employment, accountability, and supply chains.

ETI’s commitment to human rights and social justice closely aligns with KLO’s mission and long-standing advocacy efforts. We are grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with a wider network committed to advancing fair and equitable labour conditions worldwide.

As we examine Israel’s labor market in 2026, an alarming picture emerges. In recent years our sense of security has been deeply shaken, including in the world of work. With elections approaching, it is already evident that the issues of social justice, employment and economic security, workers’ rights, reducing inequality, and combating exploitation will not be at the forefront. When the guns roar, political parties in Israel fall silent.

Racism is no longer on the margins—it is pervasive. What began as inflammatory rhetoric has escalated into physical violence. Social media is flooded with disturbing footage: teenagers assaulting a Palestinian sanitation worker from East Jerusalem; a TikTok “trend” encouraging attacks on migrant workers on their way to work; and the shocking murder of Yemanu Binyamin Zelka, who was killed after confronting youths rioting at his workplace. These incidents lie along the same horrifying spectrum—each rooted in dehumanization that turns workers into targets of violence, contempt, and humiliation.

This reality is not accidental. The treatment of workers as commodities has deep roots, but recent developments have intensified the trend. Since October 7, 2023, the State of Israel has promoted the recruitment of migrant workers on an unprecedented scale. What was initially framed as a “solution” to the ban on Palestinian workers has set in place a broader process: the replacement of already vulnerable groups in the labor market—Arab citizens of Israel, Ethiopian Israelis, immigrants from the former Soviet Union, older workers, contract workers, and hourly workers—with even more vulnerable populations who are easier to exploit. Calls to expand this model into additional sectors continue to grow.

This is not a legitimate economic policy—it is institutional racism in disguise.

This May 1, we call on you to stand with us: to support the struggle against these injustices and to help raise awareness.

We demand that political parties place the protection of workers and the defence of their rights at the centre of the public agenda in the upcoming elections—and take clear, concrete action to promote anti-racism, solidarity, justice, and social equality.

When Guidelines Don’t Reach the Ground: The Life‑Threatening Gap Facing Israel’s Most Vulnerable Workers

The recent tragedies have once again exposed a troubling truth about Israel’s labor market: for far too many workers, safety is treated as a privilege instead of a basic right. There is a dangerous gap between official safety regulations and the reality on construction sites across the country. These incidents are a stark reminder of the disconnect between “rules on paper” and what actually happens on the ground.

Even though the Ministry of Construction and Housing and the Home Front Command have clear protocols that prohibit work at sites lacking proper shelters, these rules are routinely ignored in practice.

Regulations alone are meaningless if they aren’t backed by real enforcement and accountability. We cannot continue allowing the most vulnerable people in our society to pay for a “business as usual” approach with their lives.

Kav LaOved is deeply saddened and pained by the tragic death of Mary Ann De Vera, who was killed yesterday in the Iranian missile attack in Tel Aviv 🕯️💔

We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and to the caregiving community in Israel.
From here, we also send our condolences to all those who have lost their loved ones, and wish a full and speedy recovery to the injured.

The State of Israel remains in an ongoing state of emergency. Even at this time, the most vulnerable populations remain exposed and at risk. We call on the authorities and the Government of Israel to act immediately to ensure effective protection for all residents of the country, regardless of status or citizenship.

It is our duty as a society to protect migrant workers. The caregivers who support the most vulnerable members of society during these difficult moments. We emphasize what should be self-evident: a caregiver whose employer cannot or refuses to enter a safe room or shelter must protect themselves. The employer’s family must provide full support and allow them to access a protected space whenever necessary. 🕯️
