How should the legal world continue to engage with the Holocaust, not only as history, but as a source of enduring legal, ethical, and educational responsibility?

IJL is proud to announce the publication of JUSTICE No. 77, a special issue dedicated to Law and the Holocaust.

This important project was initiated by IJL Vice President Rachel Levitan, whose vision and commitment brought it to fruition. With the support and leadership of IJL President Meir Linzen, the idea developed into a powerful special issue that contributes to contemporary legal education, research, and discourse.

The issue brings together an impressive collection of scholarly articles by leading legal experts and academics that explore Holocaust-related legal and ethical questions and their relevance to the legal world today.

We extend our deep appreciation to the authors, editors, and all those who contributed to this important publication.

IJL is proud to mark the launch of a new and meaningful educational initiative dedicated to strengthening Holocaust remembrance within legal education.

The initiative, conceived and envisioned by the Vice President and Secretary General of IJL, Rachel Levitan, seeks to encourage the integration of Holocaust history, law, and moral responsibility into the education of future jurists. Its first step took place yesterday at Reichman University’s Harry Radzyner Law School, where scholarships were awarded to faculty members who are incorporating the study of “Holocaust and Law” into core and elective law courses.

This project reflects IJL’s broader commitment to ensuring that the lessons of the Holocaust remain present, relevant, and deeply understood by the next generation of legal professionals. The study of the Holocaust and Law is not only an act of remembrance. It is a vital framework for understanding how legal systems can be distorted, how democratic institutions can fail, and why protecting human dignity and human rights must remain at the heart of the legal profession.

As the world moves further away from the living memory of the Holocaust, IJL believes that legal education has a crucial role to play in preserving its lessons and translating them into moral and professional responsibility.

We are proud to support the educators and scholars who are helping carry this important mission forward, and we are grateful to Rachel Levitan for her vision in initiating this project.

The IJL mourns the passing of Abraham H. (Abe) Foxman and extends its deepest condolences to ADL and the Foxman family.

A Holocaust survivor, Jewish leader, and one of the world’s most prominent voices against antisemitism and hate, Abe dedicated his life to defending the Jewish people and advancing tolerance and justice.

We stand with our friends at ADL and send our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.

May his memory be a blessing.

Important legal scholarship doesn’t remain confined to academic journals - it shapes broader public discourse.

A recent Maariv article highlights new research by Professor Arie Reich (Bar-Ilan University) and Seth Jacobson, exploring the complex legal reality faced by Holocaust survivors in post-war Sweden, caught between religious law, civil law, and bureaucratic constraints.

Reich & Jacobson's full article will be published in the forthcoming issue of Justice, the journal of the International Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists {No. 77, devoted to "Law & Holocaust").

Through Justice, IJL continues to provide a platform for rigorous legal analysis at the intersection of law, history, and human rights.

The upcoming issue is going to press and expected to be published shortly.

On Holocaust Remembrance Day, we are reminded that antisemitism does not stand still - it evolves.

Today, it is not only expressed through overt hatred but often disguised in the language of rights, law, and legitimacy. While criticism of government policy is legitimate, denying the Jewish people’s right to self-determination is not. It is antisemitism, and it must be named as such.

Freedom of expression is a fundamental right, but it is not absolute. Incitement, discrimination, and exclusion fall outside its protection.

As antisemitism adapts, so must the response. The legal arena has become a critical front in drawing clear boundaries and ensuring accountability.

Remembrance is not only about the past. It is a responsibility in the present to act, to speak clearly, and to prevent what may come next.
