NEW REPORT BY ADALAH: Apartheid in Israeli Academia
Palestinian Students After 7 October 2023
In our new report, Apartheid in Israeli Academia: Palestinian Students After 7 October 2023, Adalah documents how Israeli universities and colleges effectively established a two-track disciplinary system following the 7 October attacks and the start of the genocide in Gaza: one for Palestinian students, predominantly citizens of Israel, and another for Jewish-Israeli students. An “administrative track” of disciplinary proceedings, applied exclusively to Palestinian students, treated criticism of Israeli military actions in Gaza, as well as accusations of war crimes, prayers, Qur’anic verses, and expressions of grief and solidarity with the Palestinian population in Gaza as grounds for suspension and expulsion. Meanwhile, a “constitutional track” was applied to Jewish Israeli students, whose freedom of expression was protected even in cases of genocidal and racist speech. According to the report, not a single Jewish Israeli student faced disciplinary action by Israeli higher education institutions for social media posts supporting genocide, the “flattening” of Gaza, or for racist statements against Palestinian citizens of Israel. This two-track disciplinary system emerged in early October 2023, and continued throughout 2024 and 2025.
