✨ A Little Dublin History From Our Front Door ✨
If you’ve ever passed the striking dark‑stone building at St. Mary’s Place, you’ll know The Black Church (officially St. Mary’s Chapel of Ease).
Designed by architect John Semple in 1830 and built in calp limestone (which turns almost black in the rain) its striking Gothic Revival features once made it one of the most distinctive churches in the city. The church was deconsecrated in 1962 and, after refurbishment, found a new life… and is now the Company Bureau office!
Literary fans might recognise it too: James Joyce mentions the Black Church in Ulysses as the shadowy setting for one of Bloom’s misadventures.
And of course, Dublin folklore adds its own twist: legend has it that running around the church three times at midnight will summon the devil.
From 19th‑century chapel to literary landmark, we’re proud to call this special piece of Dublin history our home. 🖤⛪
