If you have an accident while at work you need to find out what you should do. If necessary, you should seek medical help from your local GP or from a hospital.

An employer must report any accidents to the Health and Safety Authority when an employee is missing 3 consecutive days at work (not including the day of the accident).

You cannot seek compensation from your employer under the health and safety legislation but you can make a personal injury claim through the Personal Injuries Assessment Board (PIAB).

If either you or your employer rejects the assessment, PIAB will issue you with an authorisation allowing you to make a claim through the civil courts.

What is the Statute of Limitations?

The term is used to define the maximum time after an event within which legal proceedings may be initiated. For personal injury claims in Ireland this is a period of 2 years.

This has been changed to three years with respect of clinical negligence claims under Part 15 of the Legal Services Act 2015 which still has to be brought into force.

The time while the claim is being assessed by the injuries board is also disregarded as well as a six months period afterwards.

Every year, over 1,000 pedestrians are injured on Ireland's roads. Although you can’t be responsible for the way people drive, you can take a number of steps to make yourself safer as a pedestrian:

👉 Don’t try to cross the road between parked cars
👉 If possible, cross at a pedestrian crossing or traffic lights
👉 Never cross at a bend
👉 If there is a footpath use it
👉 Walk/run/jog facing oncoming traffic and keeping as close as possible to the side of the road

It is also important to remember to increase your visibility, particularly at night, and do not attempt to walk home if you have had one too many. Get a taxi, use public transport or get a lift home from a (non drinking) friend.
