Western Organic Producer Organization sale report

The Western Organic Producer Organization held their first ever sheep sale at Maam cross mart on Sunday 23rd August. The hoggets were on first and following trends around the country, there was average demand with the max price paid 272 euros, the minimum price 127 euros and the average 211 euros.
Store lambs were a good trade with prices 20-25 euros ahead of conventional prices of stock of a similar type. The market for ewe lambs was a brisk , with exceptional prices for blackface ewe lambs , the quality of them was also noteworthy.

Ewe lambs on average including crossbred and bred lambs were going 90 euros to 170 euros with weight ranges from 21.5kg up to 34kg.
Some examples of prices: 34 kg blackface ram lambs 108 euro; 30 kg blackface ram lambs 96 euros; 21 kg bf ram lambs 64 euros;
Blackface ewe lambs :27.5kg ewe lambs 165 euros; 23kg ewe lambs 150 euros; 20.5 kg ewe lambs 98 euros-the quality was excellent.

The organic stock on the day were strong healthy and very well presented and buyers were very happy with the quality of all stock . There was a big crowd of farmers and were treated to organic lamb burgers supplied by group member Tommy Hoban of Gleann Aolain Organic Farm, while the salads and tomatoes came from Joe Kelly organic farmer, Kiltimagh, Co Mayo.

The group were very happy with sale and has given them confidence to develop and grow . One of the aims of producer organisations is to demonstrate that Organic farming can help farmers maintain and improve margins. The Western Producer Organization is supported by DAFM. Also the support from Bord Bia and OBLIG (organic beef and lamb innovation group) is much appreciated.

Special thanks to Tony Carolan who prepared the lamb burgers and to Enda Cuffe of Megabites who did the cooking on the day.

Next week, Teagasc kick off Generational Renewal Week which runs from the 7th to the 11th September. Generational Renewal Week will highlight career paths for young farmers and support for older farmers in stepping back.
It covers tax, succession, and collaborative models like partnerships, share farming, and leasing to help families to start the transition.
During the week, their will be a number of webinars and farm walks along with many Teagasc advisors visiting local primary schools nationwide to deliver interactive sessions to students.
