🔎 Billionaire’s Explore Space: Bezos Joins the Crew

💡 Amazon’s own Jeff Bezos is launching his very own space venture called Blue Origin. The launch of its first astronaut crew to space is set to take place on July 20 on the space tourism rocket named New Shepfd. It can carry up to six people at a time and is designed to ride past the edge of space. Previous test flights have seen capsules reaching altitudes of over 340,000 feet (over 100 kilometres).

💡 On July 20 2021, New Shepard’s 11-minute automated flight will take off in Van Horn, Texas. Bezos, who is set to step down as Amazon’s chief executive officer on July 5, announced his attendance on the flight in an Instagram post: “Ever since I was five years old, I’ve dreamed of travelling to space. On July 20th, I will take that journey with my brother. The greatest adventure, with my best friend.”

🔎 Childish Gambino’s Legal Issues

💡 The increasing trend of music-related copyright infringement lawsuits has had artists like Ed Sheeran, Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj entangled in legal issues. Most recently, Donald Glover, better known as Childish Gambino, has been caught in the latest outbreak of musical copyright claims. Rapper Kidd Wes (Emelike Wesley Nwosuocha) is claiming that Glover’s 2018 Grammy-winning “This Is America” has “substantial similarities” to his lesser-known single “Made In America”.

💡 The goal of copyright law is “to promote the progress of science and useful arts, by securing for limited times to authors and investors the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries.” Thus, the law should incentivise the creation of art, literature, music, and other works of ownership.

🔎 EU takes legal action against Germany: Is the integrity of EU law under threat

💡 The European Commission on Wednesday 9 June launched an infringement procedure against Germany. The country has been accused of breaching ‘the principle of the primacy of EU law’ by the country’s constitutional court when it launched the Public Sector Purchase Programme (PSPP). Indeed, a court ruling sets a ‘dangerous precedent’ for the morality of EU law.

💡 Last year, more specifically in May, the German Federal Constitutional Court affirmed that the European Court of Justice acted above its powers, namely ultra vires, by supporting the European Central Bank’s bond-buying incentive program to moderate the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic. The EU deemed the German court ruling as an opposition to the supremacy of EU law.

🔎 The Shape of the 2021 German Elections

💡 Germany is facing a new modern era as Chancellor Angela Merkel is stepping down after almost sixteen years in the role. The federal elections in September 2021 will determine the new political identity of the country, and Merkel is a tough act to follow. With a reportedly less-than special successor in the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party with Armin Laschet, and shifting political trends giving more prominence to Die Grünen (The Green party) and the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, there could be a shift in German, and European, politics for the next few years.

💡 German elections do not operate in the same first-past-the-post way that UK ones do, so there is a greater emphasis on coalition building in the Reichstag. If the CDU does become the dominant party, it is likely to be with a smaller seat-share than under Merkel, and they might have to make concessions to the likes of the Greens. Although other parties have pledged not to work with them, the likes of the AfD might still have a role to play in running politics in Germany post-Merkel.

🔎 G7 Reach Agreement on International Tech Tax

💡 The G7 countries have agreed on the frameworks for a new international tax to curb loopholes used by multinational companies to avoid taxes. These loopholes are notoriously used by some large global tech firms, and allow them to avoid paying tax where they operate and instead register it where there might be a lower tax level, such as the Republic of Ireland or the Cayman Islands.

💡 Furthermore, the G7 has not agreed on (or at least shared) the details of any plans. It is not clear if the tax will apply to all companies, or only ones large enough to pass a threshold. Or, where all of the tax would be paid, and the nuance of who would collect and benefit from tax revenues the most. If the plans are unfairly skewed towards the G7 countries, the G20 or all other 139 countries of the OECD might have genuine opposition to the plans.
