Why Bali is growing faster than Indonesia, and why it's now hitting the brakes.

Accommodation and food services make up over 22% of Bali's economy, and in 2025 the island grew 5.82% vs 5.11% nationally. But roads, waste systems and infrastructure are under strain. In 2026 Bali closed the Suwung landfill to organic waste, kept the Rp 150,000 tourist levy, and stopped new foreign-owned companies in 18 low and medium-low risk business categories.

Bali is now deciding how much growth it can absorb.

Thailand’s cannabis market changed faster than many businesses expected.

In 2022, Thailand became the first country in Asia to decriminalize cannabis. By late 2025, there were more than 18,000 licensed cannabis shops across the country.

Then the model changed. Cannabis flower is now treated as a controlled herb. Retail sales require a prescription from a licensed Thai practitioner. Recreational sales are no longer allowed.

For shops, this is no longer a simple retail business. They now face medical-style compliance requirements, including practitioner involvement, prescription records, product sourcing rules, and restrictions on online sales, vending machines, and advertising.

More than 7,000 shops have already chosen not to renew their licences. Officials expect the market to become much smaller, with surviving operators moving closer to clinics or pharmacies.

For tourists, the practical point is simple. A foreign prescription does not automatically give you access in Thailand. You need a prescription issued locally by a qualified Thai practitioner.

Thailand is a good reminder that market entry is not just about what is legal today. It is about whether the business model can survive the next regulation.

Malaysia’s DE Rantau Nomad Pass becomes a longer-term option for remote workers.

Under Budget 2027, existing DE Rantau holders who reach the current two-year limit may be allowed to stay and work remotely in Malaysia for another two years, subject to conditions. That could bring the total stay to up to four years.
This matters because DE Rantau has mainly worked as a medium-term remote work pass. A longer stay gives digital nomads, founders, and remote professionals more time to build a base in Malaysia, test the market, and plan their next visa or company structure.

The full conditions have not been published yet. MDEC still needs to confirm the application process, fees, documents, timing, and how dependants will be handled.

Malaysia’s 2027 budget is not just a spending plan. It is a wage and tax signal.

The government plans to raise the minimum wage from RM1,700 to RM2,000, increase individual tax relief from RM9,000 to RM12,000, and reduce selected middle-income tax rates.

For businesses, this means higher labour cost pressure, stronger household income support, and a policy direction focused on domestic demand ahead of a possible election.

If you operate in Malaysia, this is the budget to watch.

Emerhub can help you understand what these changes mean for your business, from payroll planning to tax and ongoing compliance.

Indonesia’s halal certification deadline is approaching.

By 17 October 2026, several product categories will enter the next compliance phase, including cosmetics, supplements, natural medicines, chemical products, clothing, household goods, stationery, and Class A medical devices.
BPOM registration is not the same as halal certification. Each product line must be checked based on its ingredients and production process.

For imported products, a foreign halal certificate may be registered in Indonesia if it was issued by a recognised foreign halal body. Products made from non-halal ingredients must also be clearly labelled as non-halal.

If you sell regulated products in Indonesia, now is the time to review what applies to your portfolio. Emerhub can help you assess your products, check whether a foreign certificate can be registered, and handle the halal certification process in Indonesia.

Planning to start a business in Indonesia? Here's one thing to sort out early: your KBLI code.

Every business activity in Indonesia has a KBLI code. It decides what your company can legally do and what risk level it falls under. If you add new activities later, for example a software consultancy that starts selling hardware, you'll need a code for that too, and that code has to be open to foreign investment.

Low-risk codes need almost nothing extra. Medium- and high-risk codes need additional licenses and certificates, which can add weeks.

Unsure which code to choose? Our team can help:

🇮🇩 There's something about Bali. You come for a holiday, and suddenly you're checking whether you can change your flight.

If you work remotely for a company abroad, Indonesia has a visa made for exactly that: the E33G Remote Worker Visa. It lets eligible remote workers live in Indonesia for up to one year while keeping their overseas job.

And the income requirement?

Eligible remote workers: at least US$60,000/year, earned from a company outside Indonesia.

No Indonesian sponsor is required. But the visa is strictly for your overseas work, so you can't take local jobs or sell your services to Indonesian clients.

Income is only part of the application, though. Your employment contract, proof of income, bank statements, passport and other supporting documents all matter.

Thinking about making Bali your base for the next year? 🌴

Get in touch with us and we'll help you work through your E33G application:

Thailand is making a clear pitch to foreign investors: move faster, operate sooner. 🇹🇭

The new FastPass system aims to cut approval times for major investment projects by 20–50%, while also expanding visa and work-permit processing capacity for high-potential investors.

For data-centre investors, there’s another important signal: projects outside the EEC can qualify for longer corporate-income-tax exemptions — up to 5–8 years.

The bigger story is that Thailand is no longer competing on tax incentives alone.
It is also competing on speed, ex*****on and ease of doing business.

For capital-intensive investors, that could materially strengthen Thailand’s investment proposition.

PT PMA capital requirements in Indonesia are often misunderstood.

There are two different numbers you need to know: the investment plan and the paid-up capital.

The investment plan is the total planned value of your business investment in Indonesia. For most PT PMAs, this is more than IDR 10 billion, excluding land and buildings, per business classification and project location. Paid-up capital is different. This is the capital actually placed and paid into the company by the shareholders. For a PT PMA, the minimum paid-up capital is generally IDR 2.5 billion per company, unless specific rules say otherwise.

These two numbers often get mixed up. But they affect how your company is registered, licensed, and structured from the start.
