[Call for Entries: Rule of Law Innovation Challenge]

We are calling for entries to LWOB’s ninth annual Rule of Law Innovation Challenge (ROLIC). It is a global event joined by LWOB student divisions around the world, and you will have the opportunity to meet law students from other universities!

In this Challenge, you will create an educational tool that supports ongoing LWOB international programs. The tool should engage one of the following topics (please see our slides for details): Child & Forced Labour, Wildlife Crime, Human Trafficking, Afghanistan Rule of Law, and Online Child Sexual Exploitation.

To participate in the Challenge, you will have to form a team of 3-5 members. You may also apply individually, in which case you will be assigned to an existing team. Upon request in the application form, LWOB will pair teams with representatives from LWOB partner law firms for guidance, subject to availability.

[Timeline]
* 12 Jan 2023: deadline for internal registration
* 10 Feb 2023: deadline for submitting the completed project
* 31 Mar 2023: tentative date for the event (join via zoom)

You may refer to the link in  our bio for further details, including examples of educational tools and videos of previous year’s competition. If you are interested in joining the Challenge, please complete the registration form (link in bio) by 12 January 2023 (Thursday). We will submit the official registration form to the Headquarters for you.

We look forward to your enthusiastic participation! Please reach out to us through IG or gmail at [email protected] if you have any questions.

[Recruitment of Research Fellows 2022-23]

We are now recruiting fellows for our research projects! If you are passionate about gaining insights about legal developments and social affairs in Hong Kong and other jurisdictions, this would be a great opportunity for you.

1. LWOB(HKU) Fellowship

Fellows will be working in groups to research on a topic from early November to early January and present the findings in the form of Instagram posts. You may indicate your preferences for the research topics in the application form (ranging from legal and business issues like ESG and investor protection to social issues like human trafficking and rights to abortion).

The expected workload would be approximately 8-10 hours in total, and you will be provided with further guidance and templates for the work.

2. Research Projects for LWOB Headquarters

Additionally, you may sign up as a Student Researcher for a project assigned by the LWOB Headquarters, which may cover the following topics: Afghanistan, wildlife crime, human trafficking, or forced labour.

The projects available are subject to the demand from the Headquarters. If assigned a project, Student Researchers will usually be allowed 4-6 weeks to work on it, and present their findings in the form of an essay. Further instructions will be given when a project is assigned.

[Logging your hours on Time Auction]

In addition to gaining insights and enriching your legal knowledge, you can also log the hours spent on the projects on Time Auction, a charity that advocates volunteerism, to redeem inspiring experiences. Check out our previous post for more information!

All HKU law students (including PCLL and JD students) are welcome. Returning Fellows are more than welcome to join us again this year! If you are interested, please complete the application form https://forms.gle/ZsUeQcLnQZ2D3QkY6 by 31 October 2022 (Monday) (link in bio).

Should you have any enquiries, feel free to contact us via [email protected] or direct message on Instagram. We look forward to receiving your applications!

[Volunteer Your Skills & Redeem Inspiring Experiences]

Did you know 92% of NGOs need skilled-volunteers but 83% couldn’t find them? We are partnering with Time Auction, a charity that advocates volunteerism — Discover projects to volunteer your skills, and redeem inspiring experiences!

How to join:

1) Browse Skilled Volunteer Projects

From Translation to Consulting, discover volunteer projects that need your support.

2) Connect with NGOs and Volunteer
Apply to projects and get connected with the NGOs. If it’s a match, you can start volunteering!

3) Redeem Inspiring Experiences
The volunteer hours you contributed may then be used to redeem inspiring experiences, including:
· Cultural Workshop - coffee workshop, art jamming, yoga class & more!
· 1-on-1 Mentorship Session - ask for career advice, industry trends, or other insights
· Dinner with Inspiring Leaders - learn from HK's iconic leaders, ask anything you want and meet like-minded people

In addition to joining volunteer projects listed on Time Auction, you can also log volunteer hours contributed towards other NGOs after a simple verification process. This also applies to activities organised by LWOB (HKU) in the future. Redeem the experience and it's yours!

See what our publication secretary Elaine () has to say about LWOB(HKU)!

I am grateful to be a part of the
fantastic team as the publication
secretary of LWOB(HKU) last year.
Joining LWOB(HKU) enables me to
flexibly create a manageable amount
of content for initiatives and
promotions. Coordinating a variety
of stimulating events and projects
allows me to meet more talents and
expand my horizons. Join us to
enrich your journey at HKU!

Being in the UK, our education secretary, Dilys () has been actively supporting our overseas work. For those who might consider going on exchange, you are more than welcome to join us!

As the education secretary, I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, we accomplished a lot but the highlight would have to be Let's Talk where I was able to invite renowned professors in the UK for a live discussion on investment arbitration. While sharing fun moments with our members and fellows, LWOB reminds us to always keep an open mind and stay curious about global affairs as a law student.

Our event officer, Janice () shared about the workload and expectations one may have for LWOB(HKU):

My eagerness to learn and enrich my university life brought me to the LWOB family last year. At the very beginning, I was still worried that I might not be able to handle the workload. Yet, these worries have been proved unnecessary as the workload is light and manageable. Since I joined LWOB as an Event Officer, I have embarked on a fruitful and rewarding journey during which I worked closely with my fabulous team to organize various activities.

If you are a law student who wishes to explore new possibilities but also concerns about striking a balance between academics and other commitments, LWOB is an invaluable opportunity that you may look for.

Application for 2022-2023 Committee Members is now opened! Here’s what our event officer, Laurel (.lau_) thinks about LWOB(HKU).

As the Event Officer of LWOB(HKU), I have organised various activities which have allowed me to exercise and polish my organisation and communication skills. More importantly, my experience has
provided me with a precious opportunity to work with and learn from a team of supportive peers. All in all, it has been a pleasure to have served LWOB(HKU) and contributed to society with my legal knowledge. Join hands with us!

See what Taisy () has to say about her experience with LWOB(HKU)!

"The first thing I lost in law school was the reason that I came." I realised that not all legal work would directly advance justice. While we all grow tired and lose our direction at times, LWOB gives an approachable and encouraging insight into the law and social justice to anyone who is keen. With discussion and debate of global affiars, 2022-2023 is looking to be an even bigger and better year!

We welcome applications for Executive Committee 2022-23 now. Link in bio!

Here’s what our co-president, Venus () feels about LWOB(HKU):

It was a rewarding experience being
the co-president of LWOB(HKU) last
year. With a manageable workload
and a fun exco team to work
together, we have successfully
organized events to raise awareness
towards various pressing legal
topics.

If you also share the same vision with
us, please do not hesitate to be part
of the LWOB family :)
