Over the last week, we have been celebrating Joanna Gardner, Dawn McFarlane, and Rachel Norwood’s work anniversaries.

Joanna has been part of the SME Solicitors team for 12 years. She initially joined us as a family lawyer but moved to the Private Client department. She now predominantly handles Probate and Estate Administration cases and is known for her compassionate nature and clear communication.

Dawn and Rachel are part of our friendly reception team, who are the first point of contact our clients interact with when they visit our offices, call, or email us. They are both marking one year with us.

Thank you for being part of the team!

Family law could be changing - but what might this mean for you?

The government has started a consultation process to reconsider how family law affects married and unmarried couples. Based on what has been proposed, this could mean that:

👉 Nuptial agreements are more likely to be treated as legally binding.
👉 Financial safeguards could be implemented for unmarried couples similar to (but not as wide as for) married couples if they have been in a relationship of more than 3 years or sooner if they have a child together.
👉 Partners could have similar rights as a spouse to inherit if there’s no will in place.
👉 The financial remedy process could become codified, meaning that clients could get clearer, more predictable rules for how finances are handled during separation, rather than decisions relying mainly on what feels “fair” in each case.
👉 The impact of domestic abuse could be considered more fully (especially finances), affecting the overall settlement.

Whilst we welcome this news, it is important to note that this is just a consultation and doesn’t mean that this has yet become law. The consultation closes on 14th August 2026 - it’s definitely worth watching this space if anything changes.

Having a Will is a great start - the National Will Report shows that many UK adults don’t. However, even if you have a Will in place, it may still need maintenance to ensure that it stays fit for purpose.

A Will might not reflect your wishes if your circumstances or the law change, which is why we encourage our clients to book a free Will review. In a meeting with one of our specialists, we discuss any important life events to ensure that these are catered for. This could include births, deaths and marriages, or preparing for retirement or care home fees.

That’s why we’re running our first ‘Will Review Wednesday’ on Wednesday, 1 July. We are happy to review any Will, including those not made at SME, for free. Get in touch today on 01905 723561 for a free, confidential chat over a cup of tea or coffee.

Today, we’re celebrating Emma Colley, Justine Lowe and Amanda Piper’s work anniversaries at SME Solicitors!

Over the weekend, Emma reached three years at the firm. Having initially joined as a secretary in our Company & Commercial team, Emma now uses her extensive experience in legal cashiering as an Accounts Assistant, assisting in the management of funds we hold for clients.

Justine started with us as a consultant in March 2021 and is now an Associate in our Family Law department. She recently became a Resolution Collaborative Practitioner, enabling her to support couples in adopting a more constructive and cost-effective approach.

Amanda is marking five years at SME Solicitors. As Head of Court of Protection, Probate & Trusts, Amanda helps clients through stressful and emotional situations. She most recently gained her CILEx Litigation Practice Rights to strengthen our Court of Protection services.

Thank you all for everything that you do 🎂

In her retirement, she is looking forward to having more ‘me time’ and travelling with her husband.
