The silent crisis in Civil Justice
Across England and Wales, a quiet crisis is unfolding. More and more litigants are walking into the justice system alone, armed with determination perhaps, but rarely with the expertise required to navigate complex costs rules, retainers, and funding arrangements. Meanwhile, Costs Lawyers, regulated specialists with rights of audience, rights to conduct litigation, and deep expertise in the fairness of legal costs, remain under-utilised, misunderstood, or simply unknown to the very people who need us most. If access to justice begins with access to fair costs, then the current situation demands urgent professional intervention.
Costs Lawyers must now take a proactive, visible, and essential role by offering direct support to litigants in person.
Not out of charity. Not for prestige. But because we are uniquely qualified, and regulated, to protect consumers at their most vulnerable.

We are looking for part time assistance in an administrative capacity to monitor our main landline number, book in new instructions, manage the import of clients files, liaise with the team to ensure that deadlines are being met, raise invoices, record payments, deliver receipts and general support for the remote team.

It was so satisfying to achieve a strike out of the Greater Manchester Police's Bill of Costs totalling £52,449.50 against our vulnerable 88 year old client (litigant in person) who was so delighted he "almost danced down the street, [Victoria's] care and professionalism were superb...she challenged the police on every aspect of their claims against us, whittling them down little by little, until eventually she received a court order putting aside all of the costs the police were claiming. We cannot speak highly enough of Victoria's professional skills, nor of her customer care. We loved her for what she was doing, and how she did it, and that is more than enough".

I have thought long and hard about whether to share this card I received as of course it is very personal but I have decided to do so, with the permission of the family, as it highlights the importance of what we as Costs Lawyers can do and the difference we can make.

It acts as a really useful reminder to all legal professionals that costs belong to the client - the day to day decisions you make - how you conduct the case directly impacts on people's lives - win or lose - someone has to pay!

I feel very proud to have met Peter and have been able to have made such a difference to him and his family at such a precious time in his life. (See other posts for detail but in short we saved him from having to pay a £54,500 adverse costs liability) He was quite a character. He passed the day before his birthday.

Are our lawyers of the future…legally quailified with a passion for all things IT (i.e. AI) or technical experts with a passion for the Law?
