⚖️ Family Courts are changing – but what does this mean for parents?

The way private family law cases are dealt with is changing with the introduction of the Child Focused Court Model, formerly known as the Pathfinder approach.

The new model aims to:

👧 Put children's experiences, wishes and welfare at the centre of proceedings
⏱️ Identify the key issues earlier and reduce unnecessary delays
📋 Improve the way information is gathered and assessed
🛡️ Ensure safeguarding and domestic abuse concerns are properly considered

The model is already being used in West Yorkshire, including Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Kirklees and Calderdale.

⚖️ Prison sentences and early release: what is changing?

The Government’s changes to prisoner release arrangements have been one of the most debated criminal justice issues of 2026.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has now confirmed that manslaughter, death by dangerous driving and certain other serious offences will be excluded from the new early-release arrangements.

The changes are due to come into force from 1 October 2026 and will affect how some prisoners serving standard determinate sentences become eligible for release.

But what do the changes actually mean? And what are the impplications for people facing criminal proceedings?
