Apparently, I photograph light, a lot…

Looking through my camera roll, I realised how often I photograph light and what it’s doing, the feeling and shapes it creates rather than the thing itself.

Living in a Devon longhouse, you learn to grab every beam of light you can, so perhaps that’s why.

But after years of walking through other people’s homes, it’s always the first thing I notice. The shadows, trees, golden hours, how architects deliberately create light and shade and how, seemingly by accident, old buildings get it so right.

Never appearing on the particulars, yet for me, the thing that makes somewhere feel magical.

A few things worth sharing lately…

The dahlias, which have suddenly decided August is their moment. Particularly the enormous orange ones, which the bees seem to agree with me about.

Being on the water. We took the boat down the river for dinner a few weeks ago and I’m becoming more and more convinced that almost anywhere is at least 60% better when reached by boat.

And Four Thousand Weeks by Oliver Burkeman. A book about time that is really much more about how we choose to spend a life. Feeling a little bit late to the party on this one.

Over the years, we’ve learnt that the days we remember are rarely the ones packed with the biggest attractions.
(Trevi definitely one of the exceptions!)

We remember rowing a boat.
Finding a tiny courtyard covered in flowers.
The people, the laughter and the feeling somewhere gives you.
Eating pizza somewhere we’d never be able to find again.
Wandering until our feet hurt.

Somewhere along the way, I realised that’s the point.

Maybe the best itineraries leave room to get a little bit lost.

There are places all over the world that leave their mark on us.

Sometimes it’s for some inexplicable reason; a city, a mountain or at home in Devon, it’s the stretch of coastline I’ve known for so long i’ve almost stop seeing it.

I’ve been lucky enough to travel to some extraordinary places over the years, but this will always be one of mine.

I grew up on these beaches and now come back with my children to exactly the same places, the same summer evenings after school, weekends with family, walking the coast in all the seasons (sometimes that can just be in one day!)

Funny how some places become part of your core. No matter how far you travel, or how much you and life changes, they are always home.

Over the coming months I want to share more of the places, near and far, that have shaped and changed the way I see the world because I think where we spend our time becomes part of who we are.
