This National Food Bank Day, we are giving a big shout-out to Sustain, the food bank for Tonbridge, based at Tonbridge Baptist Church. We've got to know the team there - including Community Lead, Emma Lander - well over the past few years, as it is the charity of choice for the annual Walk Tonbridge Festival, which we've supported since its launch.

Last year, the Festival raised just over £20,000 in total (taking into account fundraising for other charities during the Walk Tonbridge Marathon) and £11,589.07 was donated to Sustain. We are hoping that this figure will be exceeded this year as a RECORD number of participants have signed-up to the Marathon - an an amazing 226 walkers!

According to Emma, Sustain currently works with around 90 families each week and it costs around £1,700 per week to keep the Sustain larder stocked with tins and fresh food.

If you feel you can support Sustain, it is currently particularly looking for donations including tinned meat, fruit and vegetables as well as dry foods like pasta, biscuits and rice. These can be left at Tonbridge Baptist Church (TN10 3HZ) reception 9.00am – 4.30pm Monday to Friday.

This year's Walk Tonbridge Festival features some new routes, including a 'Walk with Gee' on the morning of Sunday 13 September. If you sign up, you'll be joining Georgia Day, also known as Trained by Gee, for a relaxed social walk from Hadlow.

Georgia, is a qualified personal trainer and online coach who believes in empowering her clients to feel 'fit, confident and create lasting healthy habits'.

You will be walking approximately four miles, following a gentle route through the fields and woodland that surround the village. This is a family friendly route that is suitable for all ages, although the route does involve some stiles and gates.

All donations for this walk will be donated to Sustain food bank.

One of the new walks for the Walk Tonbridge Festival 2026 - supported by CooperBurnett LLP - is Walking the Medway - Rail Hike on Saturday 12 September.

Led by Mike Evans, this is a relaxed social hike from Tonbridge along the Medway, with a return by rail from East Farleigh (supported by the Kent Community Rail Partnership). This picturesque route will take you along the banks of The River Medway, where you will see some gorgeous riverside scenery and potentially some wildlife.

The distance to East Farleigh is 13.5 miles, where you will benefit from group rail travel back to Tonbridge, covered by Kent Community Rail Partnership. Alternatively, you can travel back from Wateringbury (10 miles) or Yalding (8.5 miles) at your own expense.

All donations for this walk will be donated to Sustain food bank.
