Silver Divorces and Mediation
“Silver divorce”, sometimes called “grey divorce”, refers to couples separating later in life, typically after the age of 50. While divorce rates overall have fluctuated in recent years, separations among older couples are becoming a more common feature of the family mediation landscape. Divorces later in life often occur after long marriages, or a second marriage, and can involve complex emotional, financial and family considerations.
Silver divorces often involve decades of accumulated assets, such as pensions, property and savings and the process can feel overwhelming, particularly at a time in life when life had been expected to take on a slower pace. Family mediation can offer a constructive and respectful way to navigate the complexities which arise following a separation. Mediators provide a neutral space where both individuals can be heard and have support in discussing financial arrangements, future housing, and family relationships in a calm and structured environment.
Mediation at its core encourages open communication and collaborative problem-solving, helping couples reach practical agreements without the stress and expense of a more formal legal process. Mediation also allows individuals to retain control over decisions that affect; financial security, family dynamics, and future wellbeing. For many couples experiencing a later-life separation, mediation provides a dignified, sensitive, and balanced path forward, helping them to move on from the difficulties of separation, and to transition into the next stage of life with clarity and respect.
