Congratulations Linda on receiving a very special professional honour

Linda Fisher, who manages Will Management Services, is incredibly proud and honoured to share: "I have been awarded Companion of the Society of Will Writers (Cmpn.SWW).

This is particularly meaningful to me because Companion is not a membership grade that can be applied for. It is awarded at the discretion of the Society’s Board to individuals recognised for ‘long and distinguished service to the profession.

After many years working in the will-writing profession, to have that contribution recognised in this way is a very special moment for me.

I have always believed that writing a Will is about far more than completing a document. It is about listening to people, understanding what matters to them, protecting their families and helping them make important decisions with confidence.

I’m extremely grateful to the The Society of Will Writers for this recognition, and to all the clients, colleagues and professional contacts who have been part of my journey over the years.

What happens when a relationship changes after a Will has been written?

The recent High Court case of McDaniel v Talbot [2026] EWHC 928 (Ch) highlights why keeping your Will up to date is so important.

Mr Talbot’s 2014 Will excluded his daughter, reflecting their estranged relationship at the time. However, they later reconciled, and she went on to provide care for her father and his elderly mother.

The Will was never updated.

After his death, his daughter brought a claim under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975, arguing that the Will did not make reasonable financial provision for her.

The High Court ultimately awarded her £123,418.

What can we learn from the case?

Your circumstances can change.
A relationship that was once distant may become close again.

Your Will should reflect your current wishes.
An outdated Will may no longer represent who you want to benefit from your estate.

1975 Act claims are based on circumstances, not simply fairness.
The Court considers factors including the claimant's financial needs, the needs of beneficiaries, the size of the estate, responsibilities owed by the deceased and other relevant circumstances.

The key takeaway:
Writing a Will is not a one-time exercise. Major changes in your relationships, family circumstances or finances can be a reason to review your estate planning.

A letter of wishes is a document that provides guidance to your trustees and sits alongside your Will. A letter of wishes is not a legally binding document and therefore there is no legal requirement on the trustees to follow the wishes that are set out.
