WARNING

Please be aware of the following, a voluntary interview is not a “cosy chat”. There is an increased use of “Voluntary” interviews by the Police.

The Police are able to contact you to request you to attend a “Voluntary” interview at the police station, or a voluntary interview at your home. On asking for further information, the Police will commonly refer to the interview as being “just an informal chat”. This is not the case. We advise against going into such an interview without legal representation. A “voluntary interview” is still conducted under caution and the information obtained from the interview is still admissible in court if you are charged.
Whether you are under arrest or attending a voluntary interview, you are entitled to free legal advice. These interviews are normally arranged in advance and we can book a legal adviser to attend with you – even at very short notice. The legal adviser’s attendance is free and independent.

You may feel you have done nothing wrong and therefore there is nothing to fear from you attending a voluntary interview without legal representation. Saying the wrong thing in some instances could see you (or another person) charged with a criminal offence or summonsed to court. It is in your interest to ensure you are protected.
