When does it start?

Got ILR? When can you apply for British citizenship? 📑

Indefinite Leave to Remain is a big milestone – but citizenship is the finish line.

When can you apply?

Standard route (no British spouse):

You've held ILR for at least 12 months

You've lived in the UK for at least 5 years total

You haven't spent more than 450 days outside the UK in those 5 years

No more than 90 days outside in the final 12 months

Married to a British citizen:

You can apply as soon as you have ILR (no 12-month wait)

You've lived in the UK for at least 3 years total

No more than 270 days outside in those 3 years

No more than 90 days outside in the final 12 months

For both routes you also need:
✅ Life in the UK test pass
✅ English language (B1 level or degree taught in English)
✅ Good character requirement

Home Office is tightening pre-settled status rules – here's what you need to know. 📢

From 9 April 2026, the Home Office has begun removing pre-settled status from individuals who they believe have not maintained continuous residence in the UK .

Who is at risk?
Those who the Home Office believes have been outside the UK for too long – starting with those absent for 5 years or more .

How they check:
🔍 Tax and benefit records (National Insurance data)
🔍 Travel data (entry and exit records)

If they can't confirm 30 months of UK residence in the last 60 months, they will contact you .

You will have a chance to respond – 28 days to provide evidence or explain your absence . But act fast.

The good news: If you qualify for settled status, you may be upgraded automatically without applying .

✈️ EUROPE TRAVEL UPDATE: ETIAS IS COMING

If you're a UK citizen planning a trip to Europe, pay attention.

From late 2026 (expected October–December), the new ETIAS system will launch. It's not a visa, but a mandatory online pre-travel authorization for visa-free travellers entering 30 European countries.

Here's what you need to know:

🔹 Cost: €20 (free for under 18s and over 70s)
🔹 Valid for: 3 years or until your passport expires
🔹 Stay limit: 90 days within any 180-day period
🔹 Application: Online, before you travel

Important reminder: ETIAS is for the EU only. The UK has its own separate system called the ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation), which is already in force.

Don't confuse the two. Don't get caught out.

Major asylum changes have just landed – here's what you need to know. 📋

Big reforms kicked in from 2 March 2026. Here's the breakdown:
1. Shorter protection periods ⏳
Adult refugees will now receive 30 months of protection (down from 5 years) and must renew every 30 months, with reassessment of safety in their home country each time .
2. New "core protection" model 🛡️
A model designed to move away from permanent protection toward temporary status, with refugees potentially needing 20 years to qualify for settlement unless they switch to work or study routes .
3. Tougher support rules 🏠
The government is removing the legal duty to support destitute asylum seekers and tightening rules around accommodation and cash payments .
4. Family reunion paused 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦
The family reunion route has been suspended while new rules are being developed – leaving many families separated indefinitely .
5. Existing cases protected? 🔒

Those who claimed asylum before 2 March 2026 will still get 5 years of protection under transitional arrangements .
What's the concern? Critics warn these changes could harm integration, increase homelessness and force refugees into precarious situations – while the backlog of asylum cases continues to grow .
