🍂⚖️ Could you be liable if someone slips on leaves outside your property?
Autumn leaves might look harmless, but once wet, they can create a potential slip hazard around paths, entrances and other outdoor areas.

Businesses and those responsible for premises have legal duties towards lawful visitors. This doesn't mean every slip or fall will result in liability, but occupiers should take reasonable steps to keep visitors safe.

Regularly checking and maintaining walkways, dealing with significant build-ups of leaves and responding appropriately to known hazards can all form part of managing the risk.

For anyone responsible for premises, autumn maintenance isn't just about keeping things tidy. It can also be an important part of protecting visitors and reducing the risk of accidents. 🍁

🎃⚖️ It’s just a prank... until it isn’t.

Halloween is the perfect excuse for a little mischief, but some “pranks” can have more serious consequences than you might expect.

Under UK law, intentionally or recklessly damaging property belonging to someone else without lawful excuse can potentially amount to criminal damage.

That means egging someone’s home, smashing their pumpkins or deliberately destroying

Halloween decorations could take your spooky-season joke into legal territory. 🥚👻

The safest rule this Halloween? Keep the tricks harmless and leave other people’s property alone.

🎃⚖️ Halloween plans vs your shift. Who wins?

Unfortunately for spooky season fans, Halloween isn’t a UK bank holiday, so employees don’t automatically have the right to take 31 October off work. 👻

Whether you can escape the office for your Halloween plans will usually depend on your annual leave entitlement, employment contract and your employer approving your request.
And yes, your employer can generally refuse a holiday request, provided they follow the relevant rules around notice and your employment terms.

So, if you’re planning a Halloween party, pumpkin picking or a night of horror films, you might want to get that annual leave request in early! 🎃

📅 October is a big month for employers.

The next wave of changes under the Employment Rights Act 2025 takes effect this October. It brings important updates to tribunal claims, trade union rights and workplace harassment.
Here's what's changing:

⚖️ 1 October: longer time limits for tribunal claims. Most Employment Tribunal claims will have a six-month limit instead of three. This applies where the act complained of, such as a dismissal, happens on or after 1 October.

🤝 30 October: new trade union rights. Independent unions will be able to ask for physical and virtual access to workplaces, and the process for gaining recognition will become simpler.

🛡️ 30 October: stronger harassment protections. Employers must take "all reasonable steps" to prevent sexual harassment, a higher standard than before. They may also be liable for harassment of staff by third parties, such as customers, clients or suppliers.

For many businesses, now is the time to review policies, refresh training for managers and staff, and carry out risk assessments. A written policy on its own is unlikely to be enough.

If you'd like to talk through what these changes mean for your business, our team is here to
help with clear, practical advice. 💙

The government has announced reforms to Empty Dwelling Management Orders (EDMOs). An EDMO allows a council to take over the management of a long-term empty home and return it to occupation for up to seven years, while ownership stays with the owner.

The key change? A home will only need to be empty for six months rather than two years before a council can apply for an EDMO. The application process through the Residential Property Tribunal is also being simplified.

A property can sit empty for all sorts of reasons: probate taking longer than expected, a relative moving into care, a disagreement between co-owners, or a rental that needs work between tenants. So it's worth knowing where you stand sooner rather than later.

If you have questions about an empty property, our Residential Property, Probate and Landlord & Tenant teams are here to help with clear, jargon-free advice. 💙

🏆 Highly Commended in the Corporate Partner category!

We were incredibly proud to be named Highly Commended in the Corporate Partner category at the North West Cancer Research Gala Dinner & Awards Ceremony.

Sam, Micaela and Graham had the privilege of representing Brown Turner Ross at what was a truly inspiring evening, celebrating the people helping to drive cancer research forward across the North West and North Wales.

It was an honour to be in a room filled with so many brilliant minds and leading scientists, and to hear more about the incredible research taking place right here in our region to better understand, identify and treat different cancers.

The evening was made even more memorable by hearing from Dame Laura Kenny, alongside celebrating the dedication of researchers, supporters and partners making such an important contribution.

We’re extremely grateful for the recognition and proud to support a cause doing such vital work. 💙
