๐Ÿ“ข Important Update for Anyone on a Path to Settlement or Citizenship!

๐Ÿšจ Apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (Settlement) or Naturalisation before April 2026 to avoid new, stricter rules being introduced later in the year.

๐Ÿ” What You Need to Know

Changes are coming following the May 2025 Immigration White Paper:

- The minimum period to qualify for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) will rise from 5 to 10 years for most visa categories.

- Special "earned settlement" provisions may reduce this to 5 years but only for those who meet clearly defined contribution criteria.

- The settlement qualifying period change is being consulted on now (open until 12 February 2026) and is expected to take effect from April 2026.

- Naturalisation timelines will follow ILR. Delaying your ILR could push your citizenship eligibility even further out.

So, this is the Government's reply received further to the petition to remove Clause 9 from the Nationality and Borders Bill.

It's really not surprising that the request has been rejected. Whilst they provide reasoning for the clause, it is still a very dangerous piece of legislation which can be heavily abused by the Secretary of State.

If recent history has taught us anything the words abuse and Secretary of State (currently Priti Patel) have been used frequently together. We should be very worried.

Take for example the case of Jagtar Singh Johal, a British citizen born and raised in the UK, who is currently being held in Prison in India for over 4 years without any charge, evidence or conviction. His "wrongdoing" was to have a website highlighting the disappearance of Sikhs in India. It would seem, Jagtar, a human rights campaigner, will now be at risk of his British nationality being taken away from him without notice as a result of the Nationality and Borders Bill.
