Good afternoon, we are finding more and more frequently, that people are being asked to pay substantial fees for a straightforward service. We met an 86 year old lady today who wanted to update her existing Will. She approached the firm who prepared the Will some 25 years ago. They quoted £1,600 plus VAT to update the Will.

We were then approached by one of our existing clients who asked us to give her a quote. We're charging £225 including a home visit.

A Will is a legal document which sets out how you wish your estate to be dealt with after your death. For a Will to be valid it must be in writing and comply with certain formalities.

We wanted to let you know that we undertake a review of our fees each January to ensure that we are offering as we like to think ' a professional service at an affordable price'. We do not wish to move away from this and so, we have reflected on the new price for our standard joint Wills for 2026. As a result, we have decided to revert back to the fee we charged in 2025. So, if you are looking for joint Wills, maybe with your husband/wife or partner. The cost will be the same as last year, £295 for BOTH Wills. This includes everything, no hidden extras.

It's been a great couple of weeks at PMEWills. We have seen clients in Maidstone, Rainham, Upchurch, Sheerness, Sittingbourne and Lower Halstow. We don't just cover Sittingbourne, we will travel anywhere in Swale and Rainham at no extra cost to the client. We will travel beyond that for a small additional fee for mileage agreed in advance with the client.

Well, having read various reports on what could happen in this budget to amended the rules on available allowances. The government has made no changes. However, they have amended the rules for farmers and those who inherit pension pots and anyone holding shares in the AIM Market (Alternative Investment Market).

The Inheritance Tax Threshold (IHT) (amount you can give away before you pay tax) remains at £325k. The additional allowance for property being transferred to children, remains at £175k.

The biggest change for the majority will be the inclusion of Pension pots into the value of an estate when calculating IHT. This is being typed while the Chancellor is still speaking and so we will need to wait and see the finer details. We will post further on this when we know.

The second change to the current rules, impacts those who own Farms/Farmland. At present, if you have a working farm that you hand down to your family, the entire value is exempt from Inheritance Tax, known as Agricultural Property Relief. Under the announcement today, any value that takes you over the £1m threshold, will now be taxable at a discounted rate of 20% (normally 40%). The Chancellor is still talking as I type and so this is very early understanding of what has been announced. How the allowance will be split between farming assets and personal assets is yet to be seen.

Third and finally, whereas in the past, if you invested money into the AIM, your investment would be exempt from IHT, it will not be subject to tax at 20%.

Budget day today as we are sure many of you are aware and await in anticipation. We look forward to seeing what the government plans are for Inheritance Tax and will update on here later today with the announcements and how this may/will impact on us all.

The UK Budget - What might we expect from the point of Inheritance Tax?

It is understood that the government are looking to make changes to the rules around Inheritance Tax (IHT). Although we can only guess what these might be, there has been some speculation within the industry.

Under the present rules an individual has a personal allowance of £325k. This is transferrable between married couples, meaning on second death there is potential for there to be a combined allowance of £650k. If you then add children/grandchildren into that relationship, and a family home to leave to the children. There is a Property Nil Rate Band (PNRB) allowance of £175k, per person. When you add all the allowances together, it means that a married couple with children have a total of £1m. Anything above £1m is taxed at 40%.

It has been suggested that Labour may scrap the PNRB, but increase the personal allowance from £325k to possibly £400-£450k. It is understood that their stance will be, it is fairer all round as not everyone has children.

The winners here will be a married couple without children. Whereas their joint threshold was £650k, it will now be somewhere between £800-£900k before any IHT is paid. The losers will be 'families'. Their allowance will reduce from £1m to potentially £800-£900k. As a result, worse case scenaro would mean that a family with an estate of £1m will now pay £80k IHT, whereas before they would have paid nothing.

Another potential change, and this could be a big one, there is talk that pensions may no longer be exempt from IHT, which could increase some estates quite substantially.

Please remember, we are looking at 'potential' changes and we will add a further post after the budget on 30 October.

Good afternoon everyone, what a lovely summer Sunday.

One of the most common questions that I get asked is, 'how often should I review my Will' or 'I need a new Will, my old one must be at least 10 years old'.

If we look at the question When should you review your Will. The answer would be life events, buying a first home, living with your partner for the first time, having children, separation from a husband/wife. If your partner is in your Will and your relationship has broken down, then you'll need to change it. Receiving Inheritance, you may think more about who else you may wish to benefit from you. You may have decided that you want to protect your home from potential care fees. All of the above are good reasons for a review.

The second comment about the age of a Will. It might be that the beneficiaries have grown up, you now have grandchildren that you wish to include, you have decided that your children are all now adults and you want them to be the Executors, rather than your ageing brother or sister.

Finally, reasons NOT to change your Will. You or anyone in your Will have changed address, your children no longer need guardians, sadly, you no longer have that pet anymore.

Goodness me, it's been nearly two years since our last post on Facebook. (As mentioned in our previous post, Facebook was littered with firms trying to sell you Wills, even we found it all overwhelming and didn't want to be part of that). It's been a good 24 months for PMEWills as the word continues to grow that we are here to offer an affordable and professional service.

Many in the Sittingbourne area will have seen this year that a local well known firm have been closed by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). We have a seen a number of clients come to us to have new Wills as a result and some to finish Wills that were half drawn up. ( In fact we were asked to complete such a Will and our client ended up saving over £800).
