As temperatures rise, employers often ask: is there a maximum workplace temperature?

In our latest blog post, we look at employer responsibilities during hot weather and the practical steps businesses can take to support staff.

There is no specific legal maximum workplace temperature in England and Wales, but employers still have a duty to provide a safe and reasonable working environment. Simple measures such as access to drinking water, improved ventilation, relaxed dress codes, additional breaks and adjusted working patterns can make a real difference.

This is particularly important for employees working outdoors, carrying out physical work, wearing PPE or working in poorly ventilated spaces.

Divorced but not financially separated? You may still have financial ties.

Many people believe that once their divorce is final, all financial claims between them and their former spouse are automatically ended. In reality, that’s not the case.

Without a court-approved financial order, claims can remain open, potentially affecting income, property, pensions, savings, and even future assets.

Even if you’ve reached an agreement, it’s not legally binding unless approved by the court.

Our latest blog explains:
✅ Why a financial order is important
✅ What a clean break order does
✅ Risks of relying on informal agreements
✅ When and how finances should be resolved

Don’t leave your future open to uncertainty.

Employment law is changing and 2026 is set to be an important year for employers. To find our more, click on our latest blog post:
https://pcbsolicitors.co.uk/news/employment-law-changes-2026-employers/

Since April 2026, Statutory Sick Pay is payable from day one of sickness absence, with the Lower Earnings Limit removed. Paternity leave and unpaid parental leave are also day-one rights.

Looking further ahead, the qualifying period for ordinary unfair dismissal protection will reduce from two years to six months from early 2027.

For employers, the key message is clear: employment risk is moving earlier in the employment relationship. Recruitment, probation periods, sickness absence procedures, family leave policies and early performance management will all need careful attention.

Now is a sensible time for employers to review:
• probation procedures and review points
• contracts of employment and staff handbooks
• sickness absence and family leave policies
• manager training and record keeping
• early intervention processes where performance concerns arise

Preparing now should help employers manage the changes confidently and reduce the risk of issues arising later.

Our Employment Team can assist with reviewing contracts, policies and workplace procedures.

Please contact us on 01743 248148 or get in touch with the team if you would like to discuss how these reforms may affect your business.

A fantastic morning in Shrewsbury supporting the Lingen Davies Cancer Support Sunflower Sprint (or Saunter) at leaton_forest_christmas_trees Farm 🌻🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️

We were proud to have members of the PCB Solicitors team taking part in the run, as well as volunteers helping out at one of the colour stations along the route.

The event was organised to help raise funds for the Lingen Davies Sunflower Appeal, which supports cancer services across Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Mid Wales.

Congratulations to everyone who took part, volunteered and supported the event today, hopefully lots of funds were raised for such an important cause.

Well done everyone! 🌻

🏃‍♀️ London Marathon Achievement

On 26th April, one of our Partners and Head of the Family and Care Teams, Sarah Reynolds, successfully completed the 26.2 miles of the London Marathon.

Sarah and her husband, Dave, undertook this challenge in support of Lingen Davies Cancer Support Sunflower Appeal, and together have raised over £4,000 for this important cause 🌻

Sarah has described the experience as very challenging, a real struggle at times and certainly a slog to the finish line and now considers herself officially retired from running!

We are incredibly proud of Sarah’s achievement and her commitment to supporting such a worthwhile cause.

If you would like to support, donations can still be made via the link below:

A huge well done to everyone who took part in the Hope House & Tŷ Gobaith £50 Challenge! 💙

Over the last 50 days, four teams: Hearts and Hustle, Piggy Pantry, Sassy Savers and The Tuck Shop Team have been busy turning their initial £50 investments into as much money as possible for Hope House Children’s Hospices.

There has been plenty of hard work, creativity, enthusiasm and friendly competition along the way and we are delighted to share that together the teams raised an incredible:

£1,455.77 🎉

This is a fantastic achievement and the money raised will help Hope House continue its vital work supporting local children and families during incredibly difficult times.

A special congratulations goes to our winning team, Piggy Pantry who raised the most and are pictured receiving the trophy! 🏆

Thank you again to everyone who took part, supported the teams, bought treats, donated and helped make the challenge such a success.

Case of the Week: Jurisdiction battles, more than just geography

When a family has links to more than one country, deciding where a case should be dealt with can have a major impact on the financial outcome.

In Ferrara v Ferrara, the Court of Appeal considered whether divorce finances should be handled in England or Italy. Despite a move abroad, the Court confirmed that long standing ties to England, the fairness of the outcome, and the scope of financial remedies available were all crucial factors in deciding jurisdiction.

The case is a helpful reminder that moving overseas does not automatically mean another country’s courts should take over and that early advice can make a real difference.
