Protecting your solar investment. Maximisming the solar future

⚠️ This bird protection is more dangerous than having no bird protection at all.

It could even leave owners on the wrong side of the law.

This is something I’m seeing more and more:

* Homemade mesh solutions
* Cheap materials
* Poorly installed bird protection
* Gaps, sharp edges, or loose fixings

Installed with good intentions…
But creating serious problems later.

---

Birds become
Trapped,
Injured,
Nest behind badly fitted protection

And once nesting starts, things become much more complicated.

In the UK, birds and active nests are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

That means:

* Active nests cannot legally be disturbed or destroyed
* Harm to protected birds can carry legal consequences
* Delays in dealing with the issue can increase risks to both the birds and the solar system

So poor bird protection doesn’t just fail…

---

Bird protection should protect BOTH the solar system AND the wildlife around it.

Done properly, it:
✔ Prevents nesting safely
✔ Maintains ventilation under panels
✔ Reduces fire and cable damage risks
✔ Avoids harm to birds
✔ Protects long-term system performance

Done badly, it can create:

* Entrapment risks
* Injured wildlife
* Legal issues
* Expensive remedial work
* Ongoing solar performance problems

---

If you already have bird protection installed, here’s what I’d recommend checking
✔ Is the mesh securely fitted with no lifting edges?
✔ Are there gaps birds can still enter through?
✔ Is the system designed specifically for solar panels?
✔ Has it been inspected since installation?
✔ Is it preventing access *without* risking harm to wildlife?

---

Good solar maintenance should work with nature..........not against it.

There’s a right way to protect solar panels from birds:
Professional installation,
Appropriate materials,
Preventative approach before nesting begins.

---

👇 Should the solar industry place more focus on wildlife-safe bird protection standards?

**If you’re unsure whether your current bird protection is actually doing its job safely and effectively, it may be worth getting it checked before problems develop.**

⚠️ Imagine paying for a 6.3kW solar system… and only getting 1.2kW from it.

What we found was a perfect example of how performance loss can happen slowly — and quietly.

This recent case study involved a 6.3kW system with 21 panels heavily affected by:

🥬Lichen
🦠 Algae
💩 Surface contamination buildup

From the ground, the panels didn’t look “that bad.”

But the numbers told a completely different story.

---

Before cleaning:
System output measured around 1,254W

After cleaning (under comparable conditions):
Output increased to around 4,649W

That’s an increase of up to **120%** in performance.

---

Solar panels don’t have to look completely covered in dirt to lose significant efficiency.

Build-up happens gradually:
💡Light transmission reduces
📉Generation drops
💸 Savings quietly disappear over time

And because it’s gradual, many homeowners never realise how much energy they’re losing.

---

What this could mean for the homeowner long term:
✅ Improved system efficiency
✅ Increased annual energy savings
✅ Reduced carbon emissions
✅ Better return on investment from their solar system

This case study predicted:

* Over **£1,000 annual energy savings**
* Significant energy generation recovery
* Around **758kg CO₂ reduction**

---

This is why solar maintenance matters so much.

Not because clean panels “look nice”

Because performance directly impacts:
* Financial return
* Sustainability impact
* System lifespan

Too many systems are underperforming silently across the UK.

---

When was the last time you actually checked whether your panels are producing what they should be?

Not what they produced years ago…
What they’re producing *today.*

👇 I’d love to hear your thoughts.

---

If your panels haven’t been inspected or cleaned in years, it may be worth checking what your system is really capable of

Sometimes the biggest energy savings are already sitting on your roof.

⚠️ You’ve got bird protection on your solar… but is it actually working?

It often gets installed and forgotten.
Out of sight, out of mind.

A few Jackdaw flying in and out…
Debris on the ground…
Noise you didn’t have before…

The protection you trusted isn’t doing its job.
I’ve seen this more times than you’d think.
What should be a simple safeguard ends up failing due to:

🥅 Gaps left during installation
🚨Mesh lifting or coming loose over time
🐦Birds finding weak entry points
🛡️ Poor-quality materials degrading in weather

Once they’re in, they don’t waste time.
Most homeowners don’t realise it’s happening until there’s already a problem.

❌ Large volumes of nesting material packed under panels
❌ Blocked airflow → overheating risk
❌ Damaged cables from pecking and movement
❌ Increased fire risk due to dry, combustible debris
❌ Persistent noise and mess around the property

**If you’ve got solar, here’s what I’d recommend:**

If you’ve got bird protection installed, here’s what to do:
✅ Act early — prevention is far easier than removal
✅ Install proper bird deterrent systems (not DIY quick fixes)
✅ Include inspections as part of your solar maintenance
✅ Look for gaps, lifting, or weak points
✅ Watch for early signs of bird activity
✅ Don’t assume it’s working — verify it
✅ Act early before nesting begins

This is one of the most overlooked threats
To solar performance and safety.

Bird protection isn’t a “fit and forget”
It only works if it’s:
✔ Installed properly
✔ Built to last
✔ Checked regularly

Once nesting is established,
It becomes more complex
It’s a risk to your system, your home,
AND EXPENSIVE to deal with properly.

**What’s your experience?**
When was the last time you actually checked your bird protection?

👇 Let’s talk.
