Coodes has been named a finalist at the Personal Injury Awards in two categories: Clinical Negligence Team of the Year and Claimant Team of the Year.

This shortlisting reflects the hard work our teams put into supporting clients and their families at what is often the most difficult time of their lives.

If a family member is in care and has restrictions in place, a Supreme Court ruling in June 2026 has changed how the law decides whether those restrictions amount to a deprivation of liberty.

The old test focused mainly on supervision and whether someone was free to leave. Now, the law looks at the fuller picture, including how the person feels about their situation and their ordinary daily life. Fewer people are expected to need a formal authorisation as a result, though families can ask whether an existing authorisation has been reviewed.

This doesn't mean restrictions are never needed, or that families should worry something's wrong. It means the legal threshold has moved, and it's worth understanding where that leaves someone you care about.

Commercial Property has moved straight into Tier 3, led by Jo Morgan, whilst Corporate & Commercial enters the rankings for the first time at Tier 4, led by Kirsty Davey. Our Employment team, led by Steph Marsh, has been named a firm to watch.

These sit alongside continued rankings for Clinical Negligence (Tier 2), Personal Injury, Agriculture & Estates and Contentious Trusts & Probate (all Tier 3), Commercial Litigation (Tier 4) and Family (Tier 5).

You'll get hands-on exposure to property deals alongside experienced lawyers, whilst handling admin, client calls and file management.

NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) can cover the full cost of someone's care, assessed purely on the level and type of a person's care needs.

The process starts with a Checklist Assessment scoring eleven areas of care. Certain score combinations trigger a full assessment, which ultimately decides whether CHC funding is awarded.

Even where the Checklist doesn't lead further, some people may still be entitled to Funded Nursing Care, a smaller NHS contribution towards nursing costs.

If someone dies whilst an assessment is still underway, or before one has even started, CHC funding can still be awarded retrospectively to cover care costs already incurred.

The reports around Sir Ranulph Fiennes' care, including restrictions on contact and a deprivation of liberty issue flagged by Care Inspectorate Wales, have raised questions many families caring for an older or vulnerable relative will recognise.

Only part of the picture is in the public domain, and families in this position are usually acting out of concern, even when outcomes look difficult from the outside. The law is there to make sure the person receiving care keeps their voice, whatever decisions are being made around them.

If you're supporting a relative with capacity, Lasting Power of Attorney or care arrangements and have concerns, specialist advice can help bring clarity.

Cornwall's built environment is changing, and we are joining the conversation about where it goes next.

Taking place on 15th October, Coodes are sponsoring the Building Cornwall's Future conference at Spaceport Cornwall.

It's an opportunity for businesses, investors and decision-makers within the county to discuss and shape its future, involving sectors such as property and development, construction, renewable energy, technology and the rural economy.

Our Head of Commercial Dispute Resolution, Kayleigh Whitman, will be taking to the stage to talk on Construction Disputes, with Fleur Uren and Kirsty Davey attending on the day too.
