What is Mediation?
Family mediation is structured process designed to help separating couples work through disagreements with the support of an independent trained mediator.
Typically, the process involves:
📞 Each person usually has an individual meeting with the mediator. This is an opportunity to discuss you circumstances, the issues you need to resolve and whether mediation is going to be suitable.
🤝 If Mediation is appropriate, you will attend or have zoom sessions with the mediator. You may discuss issues such as arrangements for children, finances, property and other practical matters arising from your separation.
🗣️ Both people have an opportunity to explain what matters to them, raise concerns and consider possible solutions. The Mediator remains impartial and does not makes decisions for you.
🔎 The Mediator will help you identify the issues that need resolving and facilitates constructive discussions around possible arrangements.
📝 If you are able to reach agreements, these will be recorded in appropriate documentation. Where necessary, you can obtain independent legal advice about making the agreement legally binding.
You can seek independent legal advice alongside mediation. This will help you understand your legal position.
Mediation helps provide a structured opportunity to work towards practical arrangements and where possible reduce conflict. It isn't about one person winning or losing.
