Millie spent her work experience week with us this month, and before she headed back to sixth form we asked her to write a blog on what she'd made of it all.

The result is genuinely lovely. An honest, thoughtful take on what HR is and why it matters, written by someone who's about to step into the workplace for the first time.

Her list of what HR should mean for young people starting out is a good reminder for the rest of us.

Notetaking deserves more credit than it gets.

It's the skill that quietly holds an HR process together, and it's often handed to whoever's free on the day.
In her latest blog, Becki Hanford shares what really matters when you're taking notes in formal HR meetings, from investigations to grievances. She also looks at where recorded meetings and transcription tools have a place, and where they don't.

Mental Health Awareness Week is coming to an end.

The conversations this week have been worth having. But the real test isn't what gets posted — it's what happens on an ordinary working day, when there's no campaign running and someone on your team is quietly not okay.

That's when your culture shows.

If this week prompted you to look at what support you actually have in place, good. If it didn't, there's still time. A mental health policy, trained first aiders, and managers who know how to have the hard conversations — none of that needs a awareness week to exist.

Two practical online sessions running with us this June, both designed to give you something genuinely useful by the time you log off.

On Tuesday 9 June, it's TUPE Made Practical, 10:00am to 1:00pm. Three hours covering when TUPE applies, who's responsible for what, the mistakes we see most often, and how to handle transfers without losing sleep over them.

Mental Health Awareness Week is a good thing. Talking openly about mental health at work matters, and awareness does shift culture over time.

But awareness on its own isn't enough.

When someone on your team is struggling, they don't need a campaign — they need to know what support is available, who to talk to, and that doing so won't go against them. That requires preparation, not just good intentions.

Some questions worth asking this week:

💡 Do your managers know how to have a supportive conversation?
💡 Does your team know what help exists?
💡 Is your mental health policy up to date and actually communicated?

If the answer to any of those is unclear, that's where to start.
