Tax ruling shakes up profit distribution
The UK Supreme Court has unanimously ruled that billionaire trader Alex Gerko must pay an additional £22.5m in income tax. Gerko, the founder of XTX Markets and one of Britain’s highest taxpayers, argued that HMRC’s taxation on deferred trading profits from his HFFX partnership amounted to unfair double taxation. The five judge panel rejected his argument, concluding a legal battle that began in 2022. Although the court also dismissed a counter appeal by HMRC for further payments, the ruling is expected to have wider implications for the financial sector.

Union chief demands end to Labour’s migrant crackdown
Union leaders are urging Labour to abandon Shabana Mahmood’s migrant crackdown. The Home Secretary’s plan includes extending the wait for indefinite leave to remain from five to ten years and imposing strict conditions on applicants. But Andrea Egan, the general secretary of Unison, described the move as a “direct attack” on union members and the further exploitation of migrants. The warning comes amid claims that as many as 45,000 nurses could leave the UK as a result.

Jenrick proposes life sentences for grooming gang offenders
Robert Jenrick, Reform UK’s economy spokesman, has introduced a Private Member’s Bill that would impose whole-life prison sentences on those convicted of group-based child sexual exploitation and sexual assault. The proposal would mean offenders receive no possibility of parole, bringing such crimes in line with the most serious offences that currently attract whole-life tariffs. Jenrick said existing sentences are often too lenient and highlighted several grooming gang cases where offenders received comparatively short prison terms.
