What should your Will include?

Many people think a Will is simply about saying who inherits their money. But a well-written Will covers much more than that.

Here's what a thorough Will should include:

Myth: If I have a Will in place, my family will be able to handle everything if something happens to me.

Fact: A Will and a Lasting Power of Attorney do very different jobs. A Will only takes effect after you pass away. An LPA is for while you're still here, letting someone you trust step in if you're ever unable to make decisions about your finances, health or care - whether that's through illness, an accident or age-related conditions.

Without an LPA, your spouse or family can't automatically act for you. Bills and care decisions can be left in limbo, and loved ones may need to apply through the Court of Protection, a process that can take months and cost hundreds of pounds.

Who should you choose as the executor of your will?

Your executor is the person who'll carry out the wishes in your Will, so it's worth giving the choice some real thought.

What an executor actually does:
• Applies for probate and handles the paperwork
• Pays any debts, bills and inheritance tax
• Distributes your estate to the right people
• Keeps clear records and acts fairly throughout

It's a role that can take months, so look for someone who is:
• Organised and comfortable with paperwork
• Trustworthy and able to stay impartial
• Available - not too busy with their own commitments
• Willing to take it on (always ask them first)

Here’s what to consider for your LPA:
• Who to appoint: Choose someone trustworthy, organised, and able to act calmly
• How many attorneys: There’s no limit to how many attorneys you can choose – most people choose between one and four
