3.5 million couples in England and Wales live together without marrying. According to a 2022 Women and Equalities Committee report, 46% of people believe cohabiting couples form a "common law marriage" with the same rights as married couples. There is no such thing.

The Government's "A Fairer End to Relationships" consultation closed in August, proposing the first statutory framework for cohabitants' financial rights on separation and on death. Eligible couples could make needs-based claims after three years of living together, and a surviving partner would gain automatic inheritance rights where no will exists.

These are significant proposals, but they remain proposals. No legislation has been introduced, no timeline confirmed. If you and your partner own property together without being married, you still have no automatic right to a share of each other's assets if the relationship ends.

That gap is where a cohabitation agreement does its work. It records who owns what, how financial contributions are treated, and what happens to the property if you separate. It operates as a binding contract between you, and unlike the proposed statutory framework, it exists now.

A cohabitation agreement costs a fraction of what a disputed property claim costs in court, and it gives both partners clarity at a time when clarity matters most.

Losing someone is difficult enough without having to navigate probate at the same time. Applying for a grant of probate—the legal authority to deal with someone’s estate—can mean gathering details of their assets and debts, completing inheritance tax paperwork and preparing an application, all while you’re grieving.

They came together to discuss what it takes to celebrate a live and how important it is to share your stories, achievements and wishes with your loved ones.

Talking about the death of someone we love is never easy. But making space for those difficult conversations can help us put practical wishes in writing, including who should inherit through a will. It can also help us share the stories, memories and details that make a farewell a true celebration of their life.

A huge thank you to the organisers for creating a business community with a genuine purpose at its heart. Today's meeting was a refreshing reminder that success in business is about much more than profit. It's about people, relationships, and making a positive impact.

We were especially inspired by guest speaker Matt Parfitt, founder of Grace Enterprises, whose message about dignity, hope and supportive employment really resonated. Through ventures including Radiant Cleaners, Jubilee Events and Half the Story, Grace Enterprises is creating life-changing jobs for people facing barriers to work, proving that businesses can be both commercially successful and a force for good.

Matt's story was a powerful reminder that providing meaningful employment can transform lives, restore confidence and strengthen communities. Thank you for sharing such an inspiring vision of purpose-driven business.

Today's local spotlight went to two brilliant Chipping Norton businesses making a real contribution to the community. The Living Room Cinema offers a relaxed, boutique cinema experience in the heart of the town, bringing together new releases, family favourites, independent films and special events in a space designed to feel welcoming and local.
