How is normal vehicle refuelling considered within your health risk assessment process?

As understanding of the health risks associated with petrol and diesel continues to develop, we're seeing increasing attention being given to health risk assessments that specifically consider normal vehicle refuelling activities.

Across the sector, organisations are reviewing how refuelling is addressed within their occupational health risk assessment processes, recognising that effective control measures begin with understanding the activity and the risks associated with it.

Whether under COSHH in the UK or equivalent occupational health frameworks elsewhere, it's encouraging to see increasing focus on health risk assessment as the foundation for identifying control measures appropriate to vehicle refuelling activities.

Emergency services and government fleets all have to refuel... so we're looking forward to catching up with existing fleet customers and meeting new fleet managers to discuss the recent developments in COSHH compliance, chemical hazard signage and PPE requirements that help inform and protect those handling fuels.

Across fleet operations, the focus has shifted beyond fire risk alone to include comprehensive health risk assessments, with the resulting control measures becoming an essential part of compliance and taken seriously. The same COSHH-associated chemical and PPE regulations that apply to fuel stations also apply to fleet refuelling activities.

As compliance standards continue to tighten, it's more important than ever to ensure the correct chemical hazard information and task-appropriate COSHH-aligned PPE and control measures are in place to warn and protect users at points of potential exposure to hazardous chemicals.

GripHero was proud to sponsor the awards for the Best-in-Show Bikes at this year's North Tawton Rugby Club Car & Bike Show.

With perfect weather and a fantastic turnout, it was great to support a brilliant event and spend time alongside enthusiasts, drivers and riders from all across the region.

Our GripHero display attracted plenty of interest and led to some fascinating discussions around fuel safety. The standout takeaway from the show was just how little awareness there is around the health hazards associated with petrol and diesel exposure.

While virtually everyone we spoke to recognised the fire risk posed by fuels, only around 25% were aware of the health risks... with many telling us they still use fuels to clean components without using any PPE!!

Fuel safety awareness from the show:
✅ Knowledge of the fire hazard: 100%
❌ Knowledge of the health hazard: 25%

The question that kept coming up throughout:

"Why aren't we being told?"

As awareness grows around the health effects of fuel exposure, the importance and growth of clear point-of-contact chemical hazard labelling and compliance with CoSHH assessments, CLP and Safety Signs Regulations continues to increase.

🌍 World Environment Day 🌍

When we think about plastic waste, we usually focus on what happens after a product is used.

But some of the biggest environmental impacts occur much earlier.

This video shows the manufacturing process for disposable PE gloves, where glove shapes are cut from plastic film, creating large volumes of offcut waste before the product even reaches the user.

Then consider the waste generated during dispensing and disposal.

Across 300 typical forecourts, glove dispensing can generate:
😱1,440m³ of plastic waste per year, and
😱a CO₂ footprint of 213 tonnes annually (requiring over 8,500 trees to absorb these emissions, every year).

David Attenborough recently celebrated his 100th birthday - a milestone for someone whose storytelling has shaped global awareness of our planet like few others ever have.

Back in 2017, Blue Planet II did more than captivate audiences. It sparked a genuine shift in how businesses, industries and individuals thought about waste, plastics and environmental responsibility.

At GripHero, that impact was felt directly during the early stages of product development.

The series reinforced an important engineering challenge:

How could PPE maintain the protection of users while dramatically reducing the environmental cost associated with conventional disposable glove systems?

That thinking helped shape the development of GripHero’s PPE and dispensing technology - focused on reducing plastic footprint by at least 75% and CO₂ footprint by 95% (compared to dispensing other more wasteful forms of gloves), all while still performing as PPE intended to protect users from incidental hazardous chemical contact in potentially explosive atmospheres.

According to the RAC, this late May bank holiday and Half Term break is expected to be the busiest on UK roads in 2 years.
With a prolonged heatwave forecast, 19 million trips are expected.

For fuel stations, that means higher footfall, faster pump turnover, and more customer interactions throughout the holiday period.

Busy forecourts are a reminder that safety, communication, and preparation matter - especially during periods of increased fuel handling.

Now is the time to check:
✅ Hazard warnings are clear, visible and compliant
✅ PPE protection is stocked, accessible, and fit for purpose
✅ Staff and customers are protected at points of potential exposure

Simple safety measures can make a meaningful difference to customer confidence and risk reduction - particularly during peak travel periods.

We’re always delighted to attend Uniti Expo in Stuttgart and connect with the European fuel industry.

A key topic this year has been the upcoming deadlines for fuel pump CLP hazard labelling, alongside the state-of-the-art solutions available to support operators ahead of implementation.

GripHero combines compliance with European CMR, CLP, and PPE Regulations to provide the required warnings and protections directly at the points of potential exposure to residual dermal and inhalation risks for both customers and staff.
