Debunking a Common Myth: Changing 5 things won’t always protect you from infringing UK registered designs.

There’s a popular myth that if you change 5 things (we’ve even heard 7!) about an existing design, you’re automatically safe from infringing a UK Registered Design.

Sadly… that’s not how UK design law works.

In the UK, infringement is judged on the overall impression your design creates - not the number of features you’ve altered. Even small changes can still infringe if the design feels too similar to an existing registered design. So a handful of tweaks won’t always keep you out of trouble!

Is your mark acceptable? (Is it distinctive enough, or a little too descriptive?)

What format should you file? (Plain word mark or logo?)
