The first meeting with Futures Family Mediation is often called a Mediation Information & Assessment Meeting or MIAM.

A MIAM will last about an hour, and gives you the opportunity to tell us about your situation, and the issues that need to be decided. We will tell you about the mediation process and other options for reaching agreements.

At the end of the meeting, we'll tell you whether your case is suitable for mediation, and you can decide whether you want to proceed with mediation or explore another option for resolving issues. We can also give you information about other services which provide help and support.

If you have children who are over the age of 10, we will discuss with you their rights to have their views taken into account. This is an important part of the process designed to support the health and well-being of your children as well as to help parents come to good workable decisions.

Couples facing the stress and soaring cost of separation are set for a boost after the Government extended its mediation voucher scheme until 2027.

The Family Mediation Voucher Scheme gives separating couples up to £500 towards the cost of mediation – helping them agree arrangements for their children, finances and living situations without stepping foot in a courtroom.

Data shows that around two thirds of the 51,000 families who have used the vouchers reached a full or partial settlement.

The Family Solutions Group has issued a protocol for 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀

Under this model, solicitors who are engaged in negotiations about child arrangements can recommend to the parents that the children's views are heard by a Child Inclusive Mediator 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 the parents engaging fully in the mediation process.

Once the mediator has met with the children and fed back their views, they step away from the process and the solicitors can then advise the parents in the hope that a negotiated settlement can be reached between the solicitors.
